In Hellcyon, we get a bright colorful world that is far from friendly.
The Good
Lucas Marangon does a great job with the art and story. Despite the friendly looking vibrant colors, there is violence involved. This is clearly seen on the first few pages when a survivor refuses to answer a question, she is dealt with right away. There's the obvious manga feel but not so much that non-manga readers will be turned off. And who doesn't like giant mech suits?
The Bad
We have a good mix of action and characterization but I'm still not at the point I fully "care" about these characters yet. I do like the character designs but a couple of the adults still feels a little off, almost like overgrown children. Just as things get moving, we come to the end of the issue.
The Verdict - 3.5/5
I wasn't completely sold after the first issue but I am starting to warm up to this series. It is nice reading a mix of the comic/manga genres. Dark Horse used to put out more manga comics and it's a welcome return. That being said, I wonder if this series might read better once it's collected. I'm all for the cliffhanger at the end of an issue but the ending here wasn't so much of a cliffhanger but more of a pause in the scene. The mix of the story along with the art and colors makes this worth checking out.
