I am sure that Hellboy fans would be more than thrilled to see a third 'Hellboy' movie, but will it ever happen? According to a recent report by MTV, 'Hellboy' director Guillermo del Toro would love to make a third film to finish out the trilogy, but he says it isn't really up to him.

"I think that everyone should ask Ron [Perlman if he wants to do it]," He's doing 'Sons of Anarchy' without makeup. He's spoiled! He likes to be the big cheese without the makeup session...I would love to do it but the heartbreak for me is that I know how it ends and I don't know if I want to see that ending. But I would love to do it."

If you are a fan of Hellboy, then you probably have some idea of what del Toro meant when he said "I don't know if I want to see that ending," because frankly, neither do I. As a fan of the character, I think the last thing I would want to see is the end of 'Hellboy,' and based on an interview with Mike Mignola from a few years back, it seems his death is inevitable.

“The problem is ‘Hellboy III’ would be the end of Hellboy,” said Mignola. “And here’s where we have the big conflict. My version of Hellboy in the comics is a finite story, but it’s going to take me 15 years to get to the ending. If he makes ‘Hellboy III’ and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘But I’m not done yet'...My Hellboy is going to die, but I want to be the one who does that. And if del Toro does my ending, there won’t be a lot of surprise when I get to the end of the comic.”

I personally think it would only be fair if Mignola was the one to end Hellboy's life, considering he is the character's creator. I would much rather see Hellboy die in the comics before he does in the movies. What do you guys think? Would you like to see a third Hellboy film? Would you be okay with his death in the third film?

Who says the has to die in the film? I highly doubt Hollywood executives would allow him to do that anyway...

The movie would completely rob the comic book death of it's impact, but I don't understand why he would have to die in the third movie. My biggest gripe is the fact he and Liz would have a kid in #3.

Just make the logical jump and shoot a B.P.R.D. movie? Hellboy 2 was clearly going in that direction anyway.

I don't see THAT big of a problem with Del Toro ending his version of Hellboy on screen  as long as it is different from Mignola's planned ending.
But ultimately I think it should be up to Mignola.

I'd love to see a third movie though...

i'd love to see a Hellboy III, but he should definitely dies in the comic first if that's what Mignola wants to do.

This is pretty difficult, because I personally don't read Hellboy, but abasolutely love the movies.  I think del Toro really hit his stride with Hellboy II, and to see him not be able to do the follow-up after that terrific effort is really sad to me.
Then again, I completely understand why it likely won't happen.  Mignola is in control of the character, and it really should be up to him to have the character end in his own way.

I hope there's a 3, but I don't see why he would have to die in the movie-verse. Surely Mignola could say "Sure, do a 3rd but don't kill him, that's my story".

@mimschkin: Because Mignola's story has a beginning and a middle and an end. Hellboy will die because if a series continues to go on forever, it looses what makes it Special - See SPAWN. because that died years ago and is still going. Badly.

Hellboy is amazing, and driven and with a purpose. That's what makes it so compelling because YOU know you're building towards this finite end. Besides even if Hellboy does die. It doesn't mean it's the end of the HB franchise. BPRD and Lobster Johnson are strong enough to stand on their own.

I recently read an article from del Toro that they ARE in the process of writing HB3 and I have also read that he says he would NOT do anymore than 3 HB movies as he didnt wanna drag it on ... personally I would really like to see it a new movie but I think Mignola NEEDS to be respected in this and if he says dont kill him they better DAMN WELL NOT!

I don't want to see a Hellboy 3 if it means that Mike Mignola is going to have the ending he envisions adversely affected.  As the creator, he deserves that bit of glory, at the very least.

I don't understand why he has to die in the movies.  There is no law that says the movies have to cover the entire history of the comics version in their alloted run.   Why can't it just cover the early part of his life and let Mignola tell the end part?

For example, I thought it was a mistake for the X-Men movies to bring in elements of the Phoenix storyline so soon.  Let us see them have more adventures as a team than killing off Phoenix and Cyclops after only 3 movies.

wow.  funny that they rushed to make the first hellboy movies when they new it wasn't an infinite comic.
also i dont see why pearlman's involvement should be the contingent of making the movie.

I agree with a number of the posts.  I mean, the Hellboy movies diverged from the comics in some ways, so why should a third Hellboy movie have to have Hellboy die?  If he does, well I can understand the reasons why but I'd hoped for at least a couple more Hellboy movies.

If the creator has a problem with it then abide by it however i would like hellboy to die not out of spite but because if thats it then there is no revival concerns and we get n epic ending. Any time a hero falls its epic its the ultimant sacrifice

I liked Hellboy and some of Hellboy II, but wouldn't Hellboy III include the human-demon hybrid babies? I mean WTF!!! and the drunken singing thing and that thing right at the end as they roll into the credits... but the action was pretty good and the story was okay... the Hellboy / Liz reletionship thing could have been written a bit better.

Guillermo doesn't have to kill Red.  Does anyone remember before all this hobbit snafu business when Del Toro talked at length about doing a Hellboy movie where he fights the classic Universal Monsters?  I like that idea lots.

I wouldn't have a problem with Hellboy dying in the end, as Del Toro doesn't direct. I have no problem with his directing. It's his special effects. All of his films look like Pan's Labyrinth.

Hellboy 3 is an intriguing thought, escpecially considering the 1st movie was a amzing. However, I really didn;t like the 2nd and I'm afraid that if they made a 3rd it might build off the terrible sequel.

Ok so Hellboy is completely awesome.... and to kill him in the thrid movie? AND in the comics? I've never read the comics so he can die if that is to be but not in the movie seriously I mean who hates it when they kill the main character in your favorite movie? They didn't kill Indiana Jones so why should they kill Hellboy?
