    Reading up on this dude, it mentions how the Nth Metal grants him the ability to fly. Then what exactly do his wings do, are they just for show? Were his wings to be severed, would he still be able to fly?

    Yeah, the nth metal grants him flight (among other things) but the wings grant him control, like steering and altitude as well as speed. Without the wings, he would kinda just float. They talk about it in one of the issues when the series turned into Hawkgirl and she flies out of a moving vehicle and explains the difference between the nth metal and the wings.
