    Quote The Raven "Nevermore"

What is nice about this comic is that it is the introduction issue to Marvel's reimaging of the old series Haunt of Horror.  Back in the younger days of comics, horror anthologies were cool.  DC had series like House of Mystery and House of Secrets, Marvel had Haunt of Horror.

Who better to reimage then the great Edgar Allan Poe?  No one really.  Richard Corben ( Cage, Banner) has been a long time fan of reimaging Poe lore.  This mini-series is the more recent offering of Corben/Poe stories.

The most famous Poe story of all is the introduction story. The Story of The Raven and the lost love Lenore.  What is nice about this comics version is that it presents a visual possibility of the horror the man suffered and why.  After the comic we are given the prose to The Raven to see if we agree or have out own view of the story.

Corben's art is beautiful let horrific.  A master of visual narration, Corben sets great tone in the black and white color scheme used in this book.

Just looking at the images without the lettering, the story still tells itself.

A man haunted by a Raven.  In many myths it is believed that the Raven carries souls away to the after life.  With the old English that is the poem of Poe's the Raven, it is safe to assume the raven has come to retrieve a soul.  It is perched on a woman's bust and looks down upon the man. With how desensitized the youth of today are, this story maybe boring because of the lack of Gore.  This story is meant more as a psychological horror the standard gore.  This mental play can really play with your mind after reading the version presented in this comic.

Another nice things about this anthology is that it introduces more Poe stories to people.  In this case The Sleeper, which is a great Vampire story and The Conqueror Worm is a very good futuristic story of the conduction of Humanity.

I highly enjoyed this issue and if you can find it cheap in back-issue, or collected in trade, I would check it out.  Poe is a celebrated writer for a reason.  Having it in comic form makes it easier to understand.

    Cheers
