Hank Pym
Character » Hank Pym appears in 3721 issues.
Hank Pym is a scientific genius, a founding member of the Avengers, the creator of Pym Particles and of Ultron, and a modern-day superhero who suffers from a Bipolar disorder. He has acted under many memorable identities such as Ant-Man, Giant Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, and the Wasp. He is also the Earth's Scientist Supreme, as decreed by Eternity.
Why is Hank Pym so defined by that one event?
Not that abusing your spouse is cool, but isn't this the only time it's ever happened? He was in a very high stress situation and had a breakdown. He did not have any malicious intent. He doesn't have a pattern of abuse.
Even devoted husband, loving father, and all around amazing person George Bailey smacked his wife in a moment of panic.
I'm not sure, but I think its alluded that he physically abused her more then once (might be wrong about that). But he emotionally abused her countless times. He even destroyed her clothes once when she took to long to get ready. I cant speak for everyone but Hank isnt just defined by that "one" moment, he has several d!ckhead moments that shape peoples opinion of him.
Abusive is abusive no matter if that means physical or emotional abuse. Both husbands are abusive, but in different ways. Also, 616 Hank Pym has done it once, who is to say he wouldn't do it again?
@The Mango:
And? Hank Pym hasn't been emotionaly stable in a good while.
I'm not a fan of him, so I can't say I agree.
" Reed is just as bad, but Pym gets all the heat. I think writers really focus on that one detail too much because they are lazy/don't know how to make the character interesting. "co signed, but Reed honestly is much worse
Pym just gets all the crap in the Marvel Universe. Everyone seems to dislike him, I guess it's because everyone found out about his abuse.
Because the writers at Marvel comics haven't had a good idea concerning the character since..... Oh wait. They've never had a good idea concerning Pym. The only person at Marvel who didn't have their head up their own butt about ol' Hank is Dan Slott who turned in possibly the greatest character piece in comic history during his run on Mighty Avengers.
The whole incident was because Marvel wanted Iron Man to be the only smart guy on the Avengers team, so getting rid of Hank was the next logical step. In short, bad writing and decades of idiotic editorial decisions have lead to Hank being maligned.
Dan Slott finally undid all that and brought him back to his former greatness.
" I've never read much Fantastic Four really, what makes Reed so bad? Just basic neglect for his family for science? "that and belittling Sue and years of him treating her as just inferior, but again that just depends on the writer
"If not worse. In the Ultimate Universe she is actually a mutant that can shrink down to bug-size and bug-like form. He sprayed her with a can of Raid. It's funny, because Ultimate Hank Pym is the same way.

But Ultimate Hank is just a loon. Plain and simple.

" @FadeToBlackBolt said:616 Hanky is a genuinely good person at heart, it's just his head is a bit screwy at times. Obviously, what he did was wrong, and I'm not trying to justify it, but he has spent the rest of his life trying to make up for it. Inferiority complexes, super genius level intellects and schitzophrenia will rarely end well. But, if you read Dan Slott's Mighty Avengers (which I cannot recommened enough, one of the best runs on a comic ever, imo), Hank is a truly heroic character; even if he is a bit out there." @courtney12490 said:I don't read enough stuff with him in it in main continuity to speak to his emotional state. There aren't enough bad things to say about Ultimate Hank though, which kinda annoys me. Like, enough people hate Hank in 616, they had to make him a bad guy in 1610? That was pretty poor of Millar imo.
I think the biggest problem with the writing is that he was conceived from the get-go as a lonely scientist looking to prove himself worthy of respect from other scientists. That skeletal character note has, even today, remained the same, just with different contexts. Add to the equation that Janet was purposefully going out of her way to make him jealous, and you'll get two sides to the abuse - a character flaw that his girlfriend/wife/ex-wife would constantly exploit for her own personal amusement.
Hank lashing out is the kettle boiling over.

Lol, like when he bit Blob's head off?
it funny that Doctor Doom get more respect then Hank Pym. People just like to highlight the bad thing he has done all beause they don't like him the same with scott summers.
" it could be worse, he could be Superman.LMFAO!
"
I dont like Pym for different reasons, My problem with him is that hes really messed up in the head. I still dont understand how he hasnt become a villian by now.
LMFAO! I dont like Pym for different reasons, My problem with him is that hes really messed up in the head. I still dont understand how he hasnt become a villian by now. "Well there is Ultron....
" @Dane: Everyone's a "tool" in comic books at one point or another. If they were created before the 90's.

What characters are known for are what they are known for. Its hard for them to go away because of the amount of writers that the characters are handed to. Since that has been made a distinguishing feature of Pym, some of those writers are just going to talk about it, because they know the audience will recognize it as being part of his character.
They could make it a point to reform him, but I bet sooner or later a writer is going to want to have him slip again, because that was in his history.
I know this is off topic but isnt that angle really funny on that picture ive always found it funny, it looks like she was knelling down next to him leaning backwards when she got hit lol, i liked Ant man (liked being the keyword) until well the writers decided to ruin his character and turn him into a mentalist
What if the government confiscated Tony Stark's collection of armors after threatening that Latverian diplomat?
