It was during Rage of the Red Lanterns that he became a red lantern and it was because, as he was saving Laira from the anger, Sinestro killed her in cold blood. Not just some random thing like him getting mad. It was a friend of his,one that he'd already caused enourmous pain to from when he went insane, that was killed by his ex-mentor.
