Martin Campbell Plans Major Visual Effects For Green Lantern Movie

Posted by G-Man (39556 posts) - - Show Bio
Green Lantern has to be a big movie.  It has to be done right.  Since Warner Bros. doesn't have any other big superhero movies on deck, there will be some pressure on director Martin Campbell to make Hal Jordan into the next big screen movie hero.  Based on the powers of the Green Lanterns, there's no question that this will be a very visually enhanced movie.

The Coventry Telegraph has reported on some of the challenges that Campbell will be facing.

It's daunting. Just the process, something like 1,300 visual effects shots, it's mind-blowing, quite honestly.

From [his] ring you can form constructs. So if you got into a fight, you could form a giant fist. Or a fighter plane.

It's good to hear that Hal will be making constructs with his ring.  The tricky part will be making them so that it doesn't come across as cheap special fx.  One of the good things about production moving out of Australia (since the Austrailian dollar has been rising) and into New Orleans is there is a good tax rate there.  By saving money in that area, more can be used to make sure the visuals are top notch.

Campbell also says he's hoping we'll see a type of hero that we haven't seen before.

He's the only superhero to my knowledge who regularly goes to another planet. Superman and Batman were essentially locked into a particular city. The Lantern isn't so Earthbound.

Who's starting to get excited over this movie?

I hope this movie is good. Does anyone agree with me when I say that Ryan Reynolds looks a lot like Gil Kane's interpretation of Hal Jordan? I do know that Ryan might not look like this in the film.

Let's hope it gets done right.  They're filming in New Orleans?  Good, glad they're keeping production in the U.S.A.  Sounds like they at least have a bit of an understanding of the character,  hope it does well.  I'm more excited about Sinestro!

this movie is a big if. i love gl and reynolds, but im  skeptical if he can handle hal jordan. as for the cgi its going to take a great effects team to give it a genuine look as well a not cheap.

I was excited about this movie from when it was first announced.  The only prob I have is Ryan Reynolds playin Hal Jordan, hopefully I'm proven wrong when I see the movie.  As long as he can keep the humor down and do a serious role he should be fine (I always liked him in Amityville Horror).  Also I hope they take the movie into space and not stay on Earth kinda like GL: First Flight did.  I know some people hated that about the movie but let's face it the GL Corps are pretty much space police and to keep them restricted to Earth is just wrong. Although in the end it would be cool if he comes back to Earth and crosses paths with Superman or even Flash.

Martin is a great director so I have a good feeling about this.

I hope they are able to have the special effects as well as plot to make this a milestone. Lets hope they can do justice to the energy constructs for the rings.

I'm betting the whole thing gets shelved in three months.

I love DC to death, but Warner just gets cold feet too easily.
