How powerful are each individual guardian of the Universe. I understand it may vary, but I heard 1 of them is around Thanos level, is that true?

Oans? They fluctuate power levels like a bulb on cyclone day. There was a time when they simply gave up (so much for power) when Hal had beaten their champion Sinestro. One time, it was said that Spectre pales in comparison to Ganthet. Then there was this time where they were being handled pretty well by SBP.

@Clark_EL: Depends on the writers, really. Before all the jobbing, in pre-Flashpoint era, they were supposed to be as powerful, if not more powerful, than Thanos. See they were supposed to be the "Most Powerful Cosmics in the Universe". So yeah they're above Thanos. That is if we don't talk about Thanos's amps like the Infinity Gauntlet or the HOTU.

Unfortunately, they have had more than enough showings (especially after Kyle brought them back) that have them looking like p*ssies and somehow below Thanos. Consider Emerald Twilight. Hal goes on a rampage against the Oans and beat some significant number of "elite" Green Lanterns. When he beat the last one, they simply gave up, allowed themselves to die and, in a way, gave Hal the power of the whole Battery. That is lame a*s Guardianship if you ask me.

Wish SexyMerc didn't leave. He's the best Green Lantern expert here in the vine.

@ssejllenrad: Thanks....So I know you said it has fluctuated a lot but would you say a white Lantern is close to Thanos too?

@Clark_EL: It depends on the Lantern, really. "Human level" ring holders wouldn't be enough but "Superman level" ring holders may. But from the feats they have shown, no ordinary Lantern (whatever colour) would be close to Thanos in my opinion. I could be wrong. One thing I would say is that a White Lantern is the antithesis of Thanos. Thanos craves for death, right? So yeah, a Life-Lantern would really piss him off. Hehe!

Any Emotional Entity (Parallax, Ion, etc.), on the other hand, I think can own Thanos, given that their host is ideal (e.g. Life Entity in Hal Jordan, Ion in Kyle, etc.).

I'm not exactly an expert in Green Lantern mythology, but as I recall, one Guardian dying created an explosion that incinerated Superboy-Prime (okay, Prime ended up in the Multiverse, but still, pretty impressive).

Then there's also Kingdom Come, where Ganthet is among the Quintessence - a group of powerful cosmic beings who watch over the world and includes Zeus, Highfather, and Phantom Stranger. So take from that what you will.

Comparing the Guardians to Thanos is such a strange idea when they're from separate universes. I'd say that the Guardians have an extremely power attack level, but an extremely low level of defense.

@Humanoid: So if you had to pick one which would you choose...Thanos as you probably know has extremely high durability.

...not as powerful as they (referring to the Guardians) would have you believe. While Ganthet has some very impressive feats, and is most likely the most powerful Guardian (as well as the only one that used to be likable), there are certainly contrasts to their power as well. For a very recent example, Sayed was easily killed by several of the Third Army's creatures when they invaded Larfleeze's home. (Spoilers for Green Lantern: New Guardians #15)

All in all though, it doesn't really matter. They won't be around much longer. White Lantern Kyle and the New Guardians are most likely going to become the new Guardians of the Universe.

Wow, interesting idea. Not to derail the thread, but has this been more or less confirmed in-continuity, is it just strongly implied, or is it just your guess? Sorry but I haven't kept up with GL since the new 52. It would certainly make the team's name actually make sense - and seeing Kyle rise from being a GL to a Guardian would be awesome.

Sorry but I haven't kept up with GL since the new 52. It would certainly make the team's name actually make sense - and seeing Kyle rise from being a GL to a Guardian would be awesome.

It's only been slightly implied in New Guardians itself. Mainly by the fact that out of all the lanterns in the universe, Sayed chose Kyle to master the emotional spectrum and save Ganthet. The Guardians also were really only ever scared by Kyle as well, and once Kyle became the White Lantern, Ganthet (who he was fighting because the Guardians have gone crazy and brainwashed him) turned tail and fled straight to Oa.

But, my theory comes from the new writer, Justin Jordan. When the new creative teams were announced, he gave several interviews and stated several times that one of the new developments in the book is going to involve the title becoming a lot more literal. That quote itself doesn't leave much room for interpretation, and it's pretty obvious what he's referring to. Especially after all the atrocities the Guardians have committed over the last few arcs. There's no way the Corps could ever allow them to continue in their current position of power.

Here's the full quote: "Continuitywise, everything that happened stays having happened. Wait, does that make sense? No retcons or such. But in the wake of the events in Geoff's final issues of "Green Lantern," things have changed, so we are taking the book in a new direction. Lots of changes there. For one thing, the title has just become a lot more literal."

And a link to the interview

Here's a similar quote from an interview with CBR: "It's pretty different. The title is a whole lot more literal, for one thing. It's still a book about Kyle, but after what happens in "Wrath of the First Lantern," his role in the universe changes. The book is about him trying to figure out exactly what he should be doing with the power he's been given."

And a link to that one as well

Wow, thanks for the links. But yeah, Justin Jordan's implication seems to really point to that conclusion - and I hope that's where Kyle ends up. It would be a natural progression of the GL mythos; from the Guardians protecting all of the universe to a council with representatives from each Corps. Guess only time will tell if this is how it turns out, but I certainly hope your theory's right.
