Born in the aftermath of the Annihilation Event courtesy of legendary JLA/Omega Men scribe Keith Giffen, Marvel's cosmic titles have undergone a renaissance. After 20 issues, Guardians of the Galaxy continues to be the Marvel's best written super hero team. These aren't your father's Guardians of the Galaxy (or big brother) because they don't take place in the 31st century on Earth 691 but present day in the Marvel 616 universe. It is comprised of rag-tag characters from Marvel's titles such as Captain Marvel, Micronauts, Adam Warlock, and Marvel Preview (circa 1976).
If you didn't read War of Kings, a massive war between Shi'ar led by Vulcan and Kree lead by Black Bolt led to a bomb going off that ripped a hole in the fabric of reality in the 616 universe. The Guardians succeed to stabilize the universe but in doing so lose almost half their roster in the process.
Having returned from the dead yet again, Moon dragon serves as the narrator for a tale that talks about how the team is coping, her own struggles/doubts, and the Guardians failure to get any kind of solid backing as every faction in the universe can't agree on anything. and what's been released from the other side is far more dangerous than any of them could have expected.
This issue reminds me a lot of The Thing. There's a lot of suspense and intrigue.
What makes Guardians so accessible is switching narrator from issue to issue to give different perspectives on the characters and how their actions affect one another.
Rating: Buy it! One of Marvel's under the radar titles.
