This issue takes a step away from the more common template for the series by focusing on both a male as the main character, and focusing on a villain instead of a hero (or heroine.) This picks up from the story from the original Grimm Fairy Tales series dealing with the interpretation of Beauty and the Beast. With his brother dead from the events of that event, Edward Peirce is being consumed by the guilt he has for leaving home and leaving his brother behind as well as resentment and anger towards his father for being abusive. The main character here is one to be loathed and the craziness associated with the character is evident here with his mental struggles to control his own anger. It was these violent episodes (which occur mostly in his head) that really gave a lot more depth to this character. The original beast was someone obsessed with a girl, this new beast goes a lot farther than that.
