The destiny of Hunter Rose is a well-known event, and the future of Grendel is an oft-chronicled topic. But what of the people the Devil influenced and intimidated? Matt Wagner, the creator of Mage: The Hero Defined, returns with the talents of Guy Davis (Sandman Mystery Theatre), the Pander Brothers (Secret Broadcast), Stan Shaw (Sunglasses After Dark), Jay Geldhof (The Lost), and Teddy Kristiansen (House of Secrets).

"Devil's Apogee" (Allred) provides a detailed account of Hunter's childhood, from his life in suburbia to the fencing tournament he intentionally lost in the finals, to his time with Jocasta Rose.

"Devil's Curse" (Pander brothers) tells of some criminals marked for death by Rose. They go to a local voodoo priest, Toro, who promises to help. However, when Grendel eventually shows up, Toro's zombies kill the criminals and bring them to hell. Grendel leaves Toro without doing anything to him.

"The Devil's in the Punctuation" (Shaw) is the story of Locutious "Cush" Bradley, the editor of Hunter Rose's novels. Cush actually doesn't do any editing, because Rose won't allow any changes to his work. Cush goes into a downward spiral and eventually leaves the country. This story provides a detailed account of Rose's five novels.

"Devil on My Back" (Kristiansen) is about Grendel's confrontation with a young arsonist who is burning his warehouses. Hunter decides to let him go because he reminds him of himself as a kid, when he also played with the idea of burning everything and everyone.

"Devil's Labyrinth" (Davis) recounts a trap Argent tries to set for Grendel, but Grendel is wise to him. They battle, and Grendel has the upper hand. He ultimately leaves to spend time with Stacy.
