    As Green Arrow catches Roy preparing to inject himself with drugs, he quickly loses his cool striking and throwing him out and pondering if he had failed Roy.Green Arrow then leaves to make the drug dealers pay, while Speedy's junkie friends return and find his discarded syringe and drugs and use them,however one of them quickly overdoses and dies from the drugs with his friend fleeing the scene.While back in his hotel Hal ponders what Speedy was talking about when he discussed the reason men turn to drugs, and bugging him so much he changes into Green Lantern and resolves to find out for himself.He then returns to Oliver's apartment and finds the body of the junkie, and quickly begins searching for Speedy and Green Arrow,while back at the airfield Green Arrow is confronted by an armed guard but quickly bests him and forces the location of his bosses, exactly what they had planned to happen.Green Lantern then finds a withdrawing Speedy withdrawing cold turkey in an alley as he's attempting to prove he's as strong as Oliver, so in a rush Green Lantern takes him to Black Canary to stay, while following a tip from Speedy leaves to investigate a yacht.

    While at the docks Oliver arrives but is subdued by two men, who quickly tie an anchor and dump him into the ocean. However he manages to use an arrow to free himself,and call to the passing Green Lantern to capture the two men.While elsewhere in the Caribbean the dealer is revealed to be a wealthy pharmaceutical head who has been developing higher quality dope,and quickly subdue the scientist and CEO.A week then passes as Oliver and Hal watch the funeral of the boy who overdosed,and the two are quickly joined by Roy and Dinah. Roy then begins to vent his frustrations on Oliver abandoning him, and his survival only being due to Dinah and Hal before punching Oliver in the face and leaving to help other's beat their own addictions as Oliver begins crying as his ward has become a man.

    In Callifornia Green Lantern is recharging his ring, when California is hit by an earthquake prompting Hal to search to see if anyone needs aid.He quickly finds Green Lantern alternate candidate Guy Gardner as he attempts to rescue a little girl, but is knocked from a bridge by a bus with both being saved by Green Lantern but with Guy seriously hurt.The Guardians then telepathically contact Hal and announce their intention of finding another suitable replacement for Hal,deciding on the African-American John Stewart. Hal then approaches him offering him the job which he readily accepts and the two then begin John's training. However they quickly arrive at an airport where they rescue several citizens, but John allows the visiting senator to be covered in oil in protest of his being an open racist,with Hal deciding upon on Stewart guarding the senator in atonement. As the senator makes a speech a man arrives and opens fire and is chased by Hal who quickly subdues him,while Stewart decides to remain in place. Stewart then quickly leaves saving the life of a police officer who had become a target, while he explains to Green Lantern this is all a plan by the senator to make the African American community into a threat so he can easily win his presidential campaign.
