    A Green Lantern is an officer of the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps, who have the ability to overcome great fear with the might of willpower. They possess power rings capable of creating constructs characterized by their will and strength to use it. Each Green Lantern is given a Sector of the Universe to protect and it is their priority to suppress any threat against their sector.

    Why are there four GL's in Earth's sector?

    I started reading comics after this occurred, so I just don't understand why there are four in sector 2814. I know that at some point they increased it from one to two GLs in each sector, but don't know why. And I understand that Hal Jordan was dead for a while so they picked a replacement, but I don't know why Jordan was re-chosen after his return (never read Rebirth.)
     
    Anyone offer me an explanation? (be detailed but don't kill yourself, please)
