What do I need to know to start reading GL in the new 52???

I picked up the first issue of Green Lantern, Red Lantern and GL corp and to be perfectly honest... I have absolutely no idea whats going on.... my knowledge of green lantern is pretty much limited to the Justice League animated show.. and (Im sorry to say the Reynolds Lantern).... I have glanced a lot of the pages on comic vine and wiki about the events leading up to this but the ones that I saw were either incomplete, not very well put together or from the point of view of one character, and it had be going back and forth between different pages for hours reading about characters and aliens that Id never heard of before and really don't have anything to do with anything.

Also as far as I know Green Lantern the least new reader friendly of the new 52 so I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a thread to catch people up...

So can anyone give a quick and easy summary of the major events leading up to now? Basically an introduction for people new to green lantern but really want to read it!

Thanks!

This is probably all wrong, as I'd had no exposure to the Lanterns prior to the new 52, but my understanding of it is

Guardians set up intergalactic robot police force to protect galaxy
Krona (evil Guardian?) thinks the police force should have emotions
Reprograms the robots to kill dudes in order to prove his point
Robots kill almost all of Atrocitus' people
Atrocitus gets mad, sets up Red Lanterns
Guardians get mad, replace robots with Green Lanterns
Hal Jordan kills Krona, gets his ring taken off him

Which leads into the new 52, with Hal being left powerless on earth and Atrocitus doesn't know what to do with himself.

@HotSauceCommittee: haha thats very well put... but what about all the multi colour lanterns?! And how does one just set up a lantern corp!?!? Is there some sort of intergalactic franchise model one follows?!

@feargalr: The respective corps exist for specific reasons, they formed sort of as a result of the outbreak of the Sinestro Corps War.  Usually good are the Green, Blue and indigo.  Violet is good now but in the past not as much.  Red fills more the antihero role while orange could be said to be an opportunist.  Yellow are the villains pretty much across the board.

@tensor: Hopefully ill get around to them at some point but right now I really don't have the time or cash to invest in them...

Basically what I want to know is where the Green Lantern corp stands now? How many lanterns are still out there? Are they still the powerhouse they once were? The police force of the galaxy or are the other lantern corps equally as powerful and still a threat??? Is Carol Farris some sort of lantern?? I read that there was a prophecy about the universe being destroyed or something?? Are the black and white lantern corps still out there? Where did Sinestro get a green power ring from? What happened his yellow ring?
