They possess power rings capable of creating constructs characterized by their will and strength to use it. Each Green Lantern is given a Sector of the Universe to protect and it is their priority to suppress any threat against their sector.

    Hal hasnt been Parallax in years. They retconned the backstory in the comics so that Parallax was a demonic fear entity locked inside the central power battery for millenia, it attached itself to Hal Jordan but wasn't able to fully take control until Coast City was destroyed.

    they altered the backstory again in the movie so that Parallax was a guardian of the universe who attempted to harness the yellow energy and was corrupted and transformed by it.
