Does the Green Power Ring for 2814 have something against women?

Throughout the galaxy there are hundreds of female Green Lanterns serving the Corps.  Among the most famous have been Katma Tui and Arisia - when one thinks of iconic Green Lanterns their names are mentioned.  Uncharacteristically Space Sector 2814 has produced four Green Lanterns serving concurrently at the same time - Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner.  As far as my understanding the ring or the Guardians will seek out a new corps member when one is needed, but an earth woman is rarely chosen.  The source of power for the ring has little to do with the physical makeup of the person wielding it, as it is based on creativity and willpower, therefore a man has no real advantage when it comes to the ability to wield it.  On four successive occasions a male has been chosen yet there are many non-males which are chosen across the universe.  The reasoning is not the career of the person wielding it either - from earth there is test pilot, Marine, teacher and artist.

I understand that it is a bit of comic based logic thing, the original in the role was a man, and therefore each successive character is easier to cast as male.  Also with already three more GLs on earth than usual it would be hard to cast a female here.    I also know that there has been Donna Parker, Jennie Lynn Hayden and Anya Savenlovish but these were all for a relatively short time.  I am not saying to erase a character or to add more, but the next time the ring is vacant wouldn't an earth woman maybe make a good choice?

I agree. I think it would be a breath of fresh air to see a female GL of Sector 2814.

It would be a good idea to have a female here, but one of them would have to die and I think in War of the Green Lanterns one of them is going to die, so maybe it will happen.

Wait, there've been three female Green Lantern's? Statistically, sounds like women are doing pretty well.

@RazzaTazz:  But shes still alive and still kind of has the powers... Just because she doesnt belong to the corps doesnt mean she still doesnt have a connection to the green lantern.

I'd love to see a female GL from Earth. I think the fact that they are all men is that they are just products of their time (and let's face it, he'd still be a guy if created today). It would certainly liven things up though if Earth's most fearless were a woman.

If they pick another human to weild a ring it should be a woman. But I don't think it's unbelievable for four men to be picked. Flip a coin 4 times and there's just as much chance of it coming up heads 4 times as any other combination. I kinda wish it would pick a teenager so we can have a Teen Lantern, courage isn't exclusively an adult trait. I'm curious as to how a ring can detect a person's courage when it needs to pick a replacement? Is there some kind of courage quotient in our DNA?

No the green ring has something against bruce wayne and bane,they have more will between them than the 4 chosen ones.
#26 Posted by Eyz (3042 posts) - - Show Bio

I'll gladly have Jade become a full-fledged GL for Earth's sector.
Thus it could leave Guy and Kyle as honorary Lanterns, Hal for his bigger picture stories (Brightest Day, Greyest Evenings, etc..) and John as the 2nd Earth Lantern. (spot he could fill on the JLA)

On an unrelated note, can't sector 2814 have someone NOT from Earth as its GL?
An Alien girl perhaps?

#27 Posted by hydrabob--defunct (14833 posts) - - Show Bio

I'll take it up with Corporate, but I really don't see this going over. Wouldn't Jade be in Sector 2814 since she is in the Justice League? There problem solved. Also there are the Star Sapphire which is entirely made up of women. I am a guy and I have plenty of love to give, why can't I join their Corps?

Thanks but I meant more like Tammy Fayer type of worship and not so much Jim Jones.

@RazzaTazz:
actually im glad you brought that up. I have never really thought about it. I always thought there were more men then women in the corps but i would like to see the Corps pick an earth woman.

My question would be what woman would you like them to pick? a new character with no previous existance, Donna Troy, Raven, Zatanna, Iris West... Which type of character would be best?
#30 Posted by RazzaTazz (8968 posts) - - Show Bio
@DEGRAAF:
I dont think the ring usually goes after people already involved in superheroics.  If it is based off of fearlessness, willpower and imagination, maybe a cool character to make a GL would be someone who is a doctor with Medecins Sans Frontieres in some war zone.  They would have fearlessness and willpower for sure.
#31 Posted by DEGRAAF (7918 posts) - - Show Bio
@RazzaTazz:
i didnt mean those people particularly, i just ment those types, a normal woman with no experience in the super hero world, a Woman from an ancient world with an essance of magic, a woman born from the depths of hell it would seem, woman who's whole life is magic, a normal human being that is surrounded by the super hero world and hase survived.

@RazzaTazz:   'Tis true.  Thou doth be one of the great minds of the Vine. . .

2814 totally needs a female GL.  Who would make interesting candidates?  Lana Lang has wielded powers before.  Given what she went through being married to Pete Ross, I would say she's got more than enough willpower. . .

Umm rewrite? x( how might that be rather masochistic and cult like , it should be centered around your intelligence and beauty...in a more so modern way?

hmmm...perhaps....I only wish my ideas could level yours, you are wonderful in every way shape and from. Any male/female feels jealous when you walk into the room....Anyone in your life should consider themselves privileged, and lucky just to know you, urghhh...this is hard Dx I feel like giving up...Not that their are not so many wonderful things to list about you, just it is happy to put them into words, for their are no words to describe how amazing you are....;D I think the ending was strong, hard not to worship and sound creepy and obsessed...=_='

@RazzaTazz

I doubt the green power ring has anything against Earth women......

It's societal structure that has things against women...

This just happens to trickle into the comic world (as comics are a direct reflection of cultural archetypes)....

Comics themselves are male dominated, because of who creates them... Men..........

Women and minorities are an afterthought, often introduced just to "appease" those who complain about the injustice...........

There was a female GL in the 50's named Donna Parker. The Guardians offered her a ring and she turned it down to spend more time with her kids (seriously). Maybe getting rejected soured them on earth women in the Corps?
#37 Posted by ltbrd (562 posts) - - Show Bio

Writers have toyed with the idea of a human female GL before. In JLA: Created Equal (an Elseworlds story) both a random earth woman and Barbara Gordon became GL members. The random woman eventually turned to crime but Barbara remained a member through the entire story which took place over a number of years. Also the Green Lantern of the Tangent Comics was a woman.

Also wouldn't put Jade as a possible GL candidate. I know she's been a member before but as we've seen in the recent JLA issues, taking and controlling the Starheart is what I hope she does soon as Alan's time has long passed. Plus, I doubt she would take the name Green Lantern and either stick with Jade or maybe go by Starheart. That would at least get rid of one more hero by the name of Green Lantern on Earth.

@velle37.....there are more and more woman comic book writers and artists in the industry today, with Gail Simone being the best known for her work in Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey showcasing the strong, independent women in comics. Even without her influence, alot more female heroes are gaining popularity. The latest version of Supergirl has enjoyed great sales since she was introduced in the Superman/Batman series. Power Girl's popularity and sales are going through the roof and she's also been  the leader of the JSA and JSA All-Stars. The Birds of Prey books have always been good and its funny to see how an all-female team handles a male teammate. We could have hours of debate on Wonder Woman and her importance/popularity. Marvel has probably been even more progressive with female characters when you consider the impact characters like Elektra, Emma Frost, Jean Gray, Black Cat, Black Widow, Wasp, Scarlett Witch, Ms. Marvel and others have had.

I agree that your last comment is appropriate to comic book history as a whole but you can't ignore the fact that women and minorities have come a long way over the past four decades (John Stewart was introduced in 1971) and will only continue to grow in equality to the traditional "white male superhero archtype" as future generations of comic book artists who have lived without social repression or racism continue to populate the industry.

I'd rather not look at the situation in a positive light until there is a significant paradigm shift...

Which there hasn't been....

There have been many illusions of this, but no lasting substance..........

@A_O_N:
I think you are on to something here- the Guardians have consistently been portrayed as reactionary, ultra-conservative, just basically unwilling to change. Now, while the blog post did point out the slightest presence of female Lanterns for sector 2814 and we know there is a female presence in the corps at large, I dont think it is wrong to suppose that the Guardians, at least on some level, represent an old-school 1950s 'hold on while I shine this glass ceiling' boys' club kind of organization. I mean, when they met with the Zamarons they told Sodam to kill them if they got out of line... kind of a cold war idea there.

So while they have not said it outright and they have conscripted a couple ladies into the Corps, maybe there is a subtextual thing going on here with the Guardians' outdated views.

Ha, I would love to see a picket line on Oa- "down with the little blue patriarchy!"

I don't think it has a thing against Earth women so much as it HAS a thing for alien chicks.

Soranik Natu

 Not to mention the way Kirkham draws Soranik's "assets". I'd bypass Earth if I was a ring too.

I wouldn't mind seeing a woman as a Green Lantern of 2814. Honestly, though, I hope if they make a new one, they're not human. When Hal was first chosen, everyone was basically like, "What the hell? A human?" It had never happened before, and nobody expected it. Then came three more humans. I mean, come on. There's a whole sector of people to chose from.

No offense to them or their fans, but Hal, Guy, John & Kyle never should have been created in the first place. Alan Scott should have just been updated, & used as the GL from earth in the corp.

Same with Jay Garrick being the Flash, & no Barry.
