    A Green Lantern is an officer of the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps, who have the ability to overcome great fear with the might of willpower. They possess power rings capable of creating constructs characterized by their will and strength to use it. Each Green Lantern is given a Sector of the Universe to protect and it is their priority to suppress any threat against their sector.

    From what i've read in Green Lantern books, when you get a ring you protect the space sector you are in. This line of thinking started after seeing Hal Jordan in the new movie previews guarding 2814. Then I thought, what about Abin Sur? He guarded 2814 yet when I go outside I don't see other muscular purple men walking around (unless i'm in L.A. or something but that's besides the point). Doesn't this mean sectors encompass a larger amount of space than people on Earth can see? So my question is.. how big is a space sector?

    I remember hearing somewhere that Lanterns never fully patrol their whole sector as its so infinite. It encompasses the entire section of the universe from the center to the outskirts.

    That's not a very efficient police force.......

    My impression was that a) the GLC is just that badass that they only need 2 members to patrol a sector and b) their rings somehow alert the GLs if a situation requiring their presence is needed so that they don't have to physically patrol.

    your b is correct and a is based on which member your talking lol. The thing is space is constantly expanding so either new recruits are needed on a somewhat consistent basis or the guy who patrols sector 3600 (if sectors are determined on a radiating circle basis) has kind of a crap shoot job XD. honestly I don't think they've ever stated it one way or another but it could make for a great Salaak issue.

    I like that theory, and it makes plenty of sense seeing as how it would explain why the GL's like Hal, Kyle, John, and Guy can ALL hang out on Earth all the time without ever seeming to do patrols.

    can't be, there billions of galaxies in the universe. Each space sector is a lot bigger. Seen as the entire Corps patrols the entire universe (dividing it in 3600 equal units), and currently the OBSERVABLE universe is 46 billion years in radius each sector is like 30 million light years in DIAMETER. That covers quite a number of galaxies.  Most galaxies are 3650 to 365 000 light years across and the inter-galactic space is about 50 000 light years on average which estimates to as few as 74 galaxies to as many as 500  per sector. 
     
    Technically the universe may be infinite so this means each sector is 1 3600th of infinity which is still infinity.
