Green Lantern #7 - The Secret of the Indigo Tribe, Part One

4

At last we begin to see the secrets of the Indigo Tribe. This won't be good for Sinestro, especially if he can't convince Hal to assist him.

We've long been wondering what the deal is with the Indigo Lanterns and now we're about to find out.

The Good

Doug Mahnke is back with Geoff Johns. With all the different Lanterns we've seen, the Indigo Tribe has kept their motivations guarded. They're supposed to be about compassion but it seems to come in strange ways. Going back to the previous GL series, we saw that Indigo-1 has some connection to Abin Sur. His name is even part of the Indigo oath (we just can't understand the language). For some reason Abin had imprisoned Indigo long ago and now they're gunning for Sinestro. As the first part of a new story arc, I was glued to each page, taking in every bit, looking for any sort of clues or hints.

There are plenty of other events that take place here. Sinestro confronts Hal about his future with the ring he made for him. Last issue Hal was determined to commit himself to Carol rather than the GL Corps. I've been wondering what happen to Carol's role in the Star Sapphire Corps. We even get to see mention of Lyssa Drak from last issue and the Guardians plans to locate the "first" Lantern. And what about Black Hand?

It's as if Johns is teasing us with each tiny tidbit that moves the plot forward. He has been busy building the GL Universe and you really feel it when he's not involved in a title. This issue may be setting up a lot for this arc but I can't help but feel some excitement. Mahnke's art just fits perfectly with Johns' script. It's a joy to see them work together on this title.

The Bad

Because this is the first part of the new arc, we do have to have some build up. It's understandable but in some ways it lessens the action. There is a lot to see but the consequences and actions will occur in the following issues. Also with each tiny mention or slight revelation, it feels as if this big mystery is being teased a little longer. Obviously we can't have all the answers in the first part but maybe I'm just getting a little antsy waiting for answers.

The Verdict

The long awaited story is finally here. Since the Indigo Tribe first appeared, they've been surrounded by secrets. The new arc sets up the revelation of what they're about and what their connection to Abin Sur is. Loose ends from previous issues continue to be addressed here but more importantly, we have Doug Mahnke back on the title after his little breather. Geoff Johns clearly has an epic plan for this title and the fun is seeing it all unfold.
