An Awesome Origin Story
An all new "secret origin" about arguably the best Green Lantern ever, Hal Jordan.
My Thoughts:This new origin story for Hal Jordan is written by Geoff Johns. Johns has been responsible for bringing Hal Jordan back to the forefront of the DC Universe and reestablishing him as one of the most prominent characters. It all started with Green Lantern: Rebirth and since then, Johns has literally breathed new life into this character. That is no exaggeration at all. He has taken Hal Jordan's character and done something special with him.
I love the issues Johns focuses on in this story. We get to see Hal as a kid and his relationship with his father is explored nicely. The way Abin Sur died has been slightly modified to fit with the "Blackest Night" prophecy. I thought it all tied together well. What was also enjoyable was Sinestro's part in all of this. I liked seeing him as a Green Lantern and go from thinking Hal Jordan unworthy, to later on defending him against the Guardians. Seeing the beginning of their relationship unfold was definitely one of the high-points in this story. And for the fans of the Hal Jordan/Carol Ferris relationship, we see the first time they met as kids and then when they meet again as adults. All of this wrapped together so nicely, creating such a vivid and compelling story. Geoff Johns has outdone himself on this.
The art is by the talented Ivan Reis who once again manages to completely blow me away. I'm such a fan of his and absolutely love his style. The coloring is vibrant and full of energy. I love everything about the art from the way the panels were constructed, all the way down to the lettering. This is exactly how art should be presented in a comic book.
This is easily a 5 star comic. If I could give it more stars then that, I would. Any Green Lantern fan should invest in this. This is more than deserving of a spot in your collection and worth every penny. This has to be one of the best origin stories I've ever read.
