Centuries ago, on the planet, Aku, Ibr, the chief scientist, initiated a plan to place the populace in suspended animation, to prolong their lifespans. While the populace lay in suspended animation, deep below the surface of Aku, they continued to live out their lives, as thought-constructs, thus garnering a kind of immortality. An alarm heralds the transition of Ibr's dream into a nightmare. After spending centuries "asleep" beneath Aku, the populace has lost all motor abilities, leaving none able to respond to the alarm. None save the Green Lantern of Sector 9, Tomar Re. Unfortunately, a marauding horde of monstrous creatures has chosen that exact same moment to invade Tomar-Re's own world, Xudar.

Unable to respond to the crisis on Aku, Tomar Re reaches out to the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, Hal Jordan, for aid. Jordan's persistent efforts have finally garnered him a date with the head of Ferris Aircraft, Carol Ferris. Jordan arrives on Ferris' doorstep, just as Tomar-Re's distress call reaches him. Ferris is left to ponder why she spies Jordan racing away, as soon as she answers the door. Tomar-Re apprises Jordan of the situation on both Xudar, and Aku. The thought-constructs of Aku's populace have become independent, and are in open rebellion against the true citizens of Aku. Ibr tries to challenge his thought-construct, only to be repelled.

The thought-construct of Ibr concocts a scheme to murder the populace of Aku, thus freeing the thought-constructs from their perceived servitude. Ibr's thought-construct gives a demonstration of a powerful explosive, designed to destroy the underground chamber housing the "sleeping" citizens of Aku, without damaging Aku's surface cities. Jordan confronts Ibr's though-construct. Much to his dismay, Jordan discovers that the energy of his power ring passes harmlessly through the phantom-like thought-constructs. To make matters worse, their weapons don't share the same limitation. Ibr's thought-construct fells Jordan, with a heavy gravity ray, that immobilizes him.

Jordan funnels tremendous will into his power ring, to neutralize the effect of the heavy gravity weapon, to no avail. Ibr telepathically reaches out to Jordan, to reveal the existence of the Gravity Hive. To gain their independence, the thought-contructs of Aku tapped the planet's gravity, and channeled it's energy into them, in the form of a radiation which could sustain them, separate from their hosts. Ibr pleads with Jordan to save them, as the explosive device has already been planted. Jordan uses his power ring, to tap the psychic energy of the populace of Aku, to create a thought-construct of himself. Jordan's thought-construct disables the explosive device.

As Jordan's thought-construct is as ethereal as the other thought-constructs, their heavy gravity weapons have no effect on it. Working through his thought-construct, Jordan funnels his will power-fueled ring energy into the Gravity Hive, increasing it's output. The thought-constructs focus their combined will on Jordan's thought-construct. Jordan desperately maintains his thought-construct long enough for the overloaded power of the Gravity Hive to subdue the though-constructs of Aku. Pooling his ring energy with that of his thought-construct's, Jordan again tries to neutralize the heavy gravity field surrounding him, to no avail.

Jordan generates over a dozen thought-constructs of himself. Combining his power ring energy to theirs finally neutralizes the heavy gravity field. Jordan makes contact with Ibr, to determine why the thought-constructs rebelled. After using his power ring to run a diagnostic on Ibr's control center, Jordan discovers that the thought patterns of two of Aku's citizens, Alyssha and Cosmo, became jumbled, disrupting Ibr's entire system. Jordan "awakens" Alyssha, and Cosmo, and learns that they have fallen in love. Unable to truly be with one another, while frozen in suspend animation, the tormented angst of the "young" would-be lovers spread throughout the thought-constructs of Aku, manifesting as a desire to be free.

Jordan uses his power ring to restore vigor and mobility to Alyssha, and Cosmo, who choose to remain awake. Jordan offers to do the same for the rest of Aku's populace, but finds they are content to remain in suspended animation, while living vicariously through their thought-constructs. With the crisis on Aku resolved, Jordan journeys to Xudar, to offer Tomar-Re aid against the invasion. Tomar-Re finds himself on the losing end of a battle against a seemingly implacable foe. Jordan's timely arrival, after recharging his power ring with Tomar-Re's power battery, allows Tomar-Re to turn the tide of battle, and rout the invading forces.

From Tomar-Re, Jordan learns of the existence of the Guardians of The Universe. Jordan learns all he can, about the Guardians of The Universe, before departing Tomar-Re's company. Jordan returns to Earth, to find that Ferris has been looking for him. Astonishingly, Jordan is able to placate Ferris, and garner another date with her, while offering her virtually no explanation for his mysterious behavior. Ferris lies about spending time with the Green Lantern, while Jordan was away. Unbeknownst to Ferris, her attempt to make Jordan jealous, of his own alter-ego, only encourages Jordan in his courtship of Ferris.
