The Green Lantern Takes Desperate Measures in The Blackest Night

The Blackest Night continues to shock and terrify the DC universe in this intense 50th issue of Geoff John's Green Lantern.  The book picks up in the battle-ravaged Coast City as our team of Lanterns, deputy Lanterns, guardians, and other allies, heroes and villains alike, fight for survival against the growing forces of the Black Lantern Corp.  Their biggest problem is the possessed Spectre who is battling most of the team single-handedly.  Hal Jordan knows they're running out of time and he needs to make a big decision to gain the upper hand.

Between his squabbles with Sinestro, he comes up with the risky strategy of using intergalactic fear consuming parasite, The Parallax to combat the Spectre.  Kind of reminds me of that episode of Ghostbusters where they release Stay Puft from the containment unit to fight the giant mantis.  Its an understatement to say that it has caused problems for the Lantern Corps before, but this time, Hal feels like he can control it.  But can he? The last panel leaves you kind of wondering.    And anxious for number 51.  This book is worth checking out if you've been following Blackest Night, but it is  very "slam bang" with plenty of style and not too much substance.  Of course, that is not necessarily a bad thing.  Doug Mahnke's penciling is absolutely gorgeous and fits so well with the dark edge of this storyline.  The colorists and inkers also deserve credit for truly helping bring this story to life.  The action is marvelously illustrated and frankly well worth your 3.99 if you like to see good art.  Its not perfect, but I will call it a must buy.  So go buy it

So with this anniversary issue we see Hal Jordan's response to Ganthet bringing in "honorary" inductees into all the Corps.  Throughout the issue we see the various interactions between these honorary members and the Corps respected leaders.  Most are welcome by their leaders.  One isn't.  I'll give you one guess on who doesn't want to share their power.   Moving on, the Spectre makes his grand appearance and seems to almost be beaten the same way most of the other Black Lanterns have been.  Alm...

SPOILER WARNING! First off, I can't believe that this is Jim Lee's artwork.  After seeing him work his magic in Batman: Hush and All-Star Batman and Robin, I find it hard to believe that he did this.  Not saying that this isn't good, it is.  It's just I've seen him do better.  Anyway, moving along.  First off, I just want to say that I love the idea of the Deputy Lanterns.  So much, in fact, that I really think that Barry Allen should remain a Blue Lantern and Scarecrow a Sinestro Corps Officer....
