Why Do Something When Others Could Do It For You?
I wasn't really planning on picking this up to be quite honest with you, mainly because aside from the animated series i've never been interested in Mongul as a villain, i do like him, but considering that for some time now i'v heard people call him a Joke in comparison to what he was, i decided that i didn't really want to read this, and to be honest the villain issues haven't been all that impressive to me so forgive me if i was skeptical about this. However i was pleasantly surprised.
First of all, i really liked the art, i think the colors were energetic and the detailing was spot on for this one issues, not to mention that the spectacle of watching ships getting blown up is of course as always amazing. However i do have one minor gripe, which is Monguls design. I know it might seem that i am nitpicking but the bulky version of mongul grew on me back from the animated series, and every time i saw him in the comics he was always a monstrous looking tyrant. Not saying that he looks bad, in fact his get up is amazing, and i really like it. But he would feel like his older self if he was slightly more buff than lean. Just my view.
As for the writing, i absolutely loved it. Mongul here is by all means an amazing villain, i really enjoyed his dialogue about natural selection which is directly tied to his WARWORLD concept. "the Strong Beat The Weak", it's a simple motto, but most likely a deadly one. But the greatest thing about this issues is not what Mongul does, it's in fact what he doesn't do. His greatest Weapons here were his words and he acted like a complete monster and caused utter destruction without moving a finger. THIS shows that mongul is a true tyrant, and a powerful villain, i mean, why Do something yourself when someone can do it for you?
Furthermore, Despite the fact that Mongul doesn't TECHNICALLY do anything here, it's implied that when he DOES decide to get his hands dirty, then you should most likely start running. This Issue establishes two very important concepts for this character. One: Mongul is a great and energetic villain, who has a personality and is someone i wouldn't mind reading upon. And Two: it's clearly shown here that he is a serious threat, someone that you DO not want to mess with.
all in all this was a great read, i'm a new comer but none the less i was fairly impressed with what i read here, and i'd suggest picking this up because it's one of the good villain month issues.
