History
Norman Osborn was a ruthless co-owner of a leading New York chemical manufacturing firm, which also had research division that dealt in other areas including robotics. Osborn was obsessed with gaining increasing amounts of wealth and power, even by unethical means. When he discovered that his long time partner, Professor Mendel Stromm, had taken a sum of money from the company for his personal use. Osborn seized the opportunity: although he knew that Stromm intended to pay him back the money, he had Stromm arrested and jailed for theft.
With Stromm gone, Osborn began going through the notes on Stromm’s private research. Osborn thus stumbled upon a formula that Stromm was developing with the intention of using it to increase a person’s intelligence and physical strength. That night Osborn tried to re-create the chemical from Stromm’s notes. He watched as the solution turned green and then it exploded. Osborn was hospitalized for weeks as surgeons labored round the clock to save his life. They did so, and Osborn was finally released. Only he knew that the chemical had indeed increased his intelligence dramatically, but what Osborn did not realize was that it had also driven him insane. He decided to become a costumed criminal and use his increased intelligence to build upon his company’s scientific devices and chemical discoveries and turn them into his weapons. He designed a costume for himself which he coloured green, after the solution, and named himself the Green Goblin.
The Goblin decided to begin his criminal career by killing Spider-Man who had only recently become a crime-fighter. Having thus made a tremendous reputation for himself, the Goblin would then attempt to organize a worldwide crime syndicate with himself as the head. The Goblin first hired the criminal Enforcers, and then recalling Spider-Man early ambitions. In show business, contacted film producer B.J. Cosmos (born Kozmojian) of Cosmos Productions, a studio known for its low budget adventure films. The Goblin was then able to approach Spider-Man with an offer from Cosmos to star in his own film. Both Spider-Man and B.J Cosmos believed the Goblin to be simply another new costumed adventurer, and Spider-Man agreed to the deal in order to make money for his Aunt May. However, once on location in the New Mexico desert, the Goblin and the Enforcers attacked the unsuspecting Spider-Man. The attempt on Spider-Man’s life failed and the film was canceled. The Goblin next ambushed Spider-Man at a meeting of a Spider-Man fan club, but again failed to kill him. So the Goblin resumed his plans to become the head of his own syndicate. His first step was to intimidate the members of the Lucky Lobo gang into making him their leader. The Goblin again failed to kill Spider-Man and the Lucky Lobo’s gang was arrested.
Next the Goblin entered a short-lived partnership with another masked criminal, the Crime-Master, in order to organize all of New York City area’s independent crime gangs under their joint leadership, and thereby provide an effective counterforce to Maggia domination of the area’s crime. The Crime-Master soon ended the partnership and made his bid to organize the gangs himself. The Goblin captured Spider-Man and brought his prisoner to the underworld meeting where the Crime-Master hoped to be named leader of the independent gangs. The mobsters then decided to make the Goblin their leader, but withdrew the offer after Spider-Man broke free and he and the police began fighting the assembled gangsters. The Goblin escaped, and the Crime-Master was killed by a police in a gun battle.
The Goblin was now determined to destroy Spider-Man before making another try for the underworld power. After exposing Spider-Man to a gas which temporarily weakened his spider-sense, the Goblin was able to follow him undetected and learn his secret identity of Peter Parker. Then the Goblin easily captured Parker and brought him prisoner to one of his hideouts, where he boastfully revealed to him his true identity of Norman Osborn, the father of Parker’s friend Harry. In the ensuing battle, the Goblin knocked live electrical wires into vials of chemicals which he fell against. The resulting shock blanked out Osborn’s memory of the years during which he had been the Green Goblin. Deciding that Osborn should not be punished for actions he committed while insane, and that Harry would be better off not knowing his father was the Goblin, Spider-Man decided not to expose Osborn’s other identity.
Twice during the following the years the Goblin’s personality and memory resurfaced in Osborn’s mind, but each time Spider-Man managed to induce Osborn into repressing his Goblin self and returning to his normal state of mind, in which he had no memory of being the Goblin. However, when Osborn relapsed the third time, he kidnapped Parker’s girlfriend Gwen Stacy and threw her the Washington Bridge. Even though Spider-Man caught her, the shock of the long, rapid fall had killed her. In a battle with Spider-Man that followed, the Green Goblin was accidentally impaled upon the sharp point of his own jet-glider and died.
Harry Osborn, Norman’s son was at that time in a mentally unstable state due to influence of certain drugs he had been taking. He witnessed the final battle of Spider-Man and the Goblin, and thus witnessed the Goblin’s death. While no one was watching, Harry removed the Goblin’s mask and costume so that the police would find Norman Osborn’s body without any evidence that he was the Goblin. Harry now blamed Spider-Man for murdering his father, and some time later, he discovered that Parker was Spider-Man. Now insane, Harry became the New Green Goblin and battled Spider-Man who defeated him. Spider-Man removed Harry’s costume and Harry was turned over to the police who refused to believe Harry’s claims to be the Green Goblin. Only Harry and Spider-Man knew that the original Green Goblin was dead, and the police thought Harry was too young to have been the Goblin for several years.
Harry was placed under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Barton Hamilton who successfully cured Harry of his insanity, and even induced him into forgetting his life as the Goblin and hence his knowledge of Spider-Man’s secret identity. However, under hypnosis, Harry told Hamilton all about him being the Goblin, the Goblin’s secrets and the secret identity of Spider-Man. Hamilton checked out Harry’s stories and discovered them to be true, and even found one of the Goblin’s many hideouts. Eventually, covetous of the Goblin’s powers, Hamilton decided to become the Green Goblin himself. He trained himself in using the Goblin’s equipment, and then took Harry prisoner. As the Goblin, Hamilton then invaded the underworld meeting at which Silvermane was attempting to organize New York City’s independent criminal gangs under the leadership of his Maggia “family”. The Goblin proposed that he lead them instead. The conflict led to a three-way fight among the Goblin, Silvermane and, Spider-Man, in the course of which Silvermane was nearly killed in a fall. Harry escaped captivity and again assumed the identity of the Goblin in order to get revenge on Hamilton. After catching up with him, Harry permanently rejected his own Goblin identity. Hamilton was killed by a explosion of a bomb with which he tried to kill Harry and Spider-Man. Harry again lost the memory of being the Goblin as well as his knowledge of Spider-Man’s secret identity. Harry later recovered his memories and he still felt rage within him, he injected himself with a more potent goblin formula, making him stronger. Harry then planned to kill all his enemies in one act by inviting them to dinner and setting up a bomb to kill them. When Peter realized this, they battle with Harry getting the upper hand. But when he realized that his son, and Mary Jane was also inside where the bomb is. The two worked together to saved their love one and were successful in their rescue. But Harry paid the price when he took the goblin formula, it also poisoned him. He died on route to a hospital, but not before saying to Peter that they will always be best of friends.
It was recently revealed that after Osborn had rescued Parker's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy and her father from the Kingpin, she and he entered into a brief affair. Gwen got pregnant and had an accelerated pregnancy. She gave birth to twins, Gabriel and Sarah in France. The children remained in the care of people working for Osborn but she refused to give him custody. She planned on telling Peter in the hopes that he would understand, marry her, and help raise the kids.
Enraged, Osborn kidnapped Gwen and took her to the top of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Green Goblin and Spider-Man fought but Osborn managed to throw Gwen off the bridge. Spider-Man attempted to snag her with webbing but she was already dead. Struck with grief, Spider-Man began pummeling Osborn. He was able to stop himself before it was too late. Osborn used this moment to call his glider towards the grieving Spider-Man in the hopes of impaling him. Spider-Man managed to avoid the glider and it ended up impaling Osborn instead. Thus Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin died. Or so it seemed.
Norman Osborn eventually returned to torment the life of Peter including the "death" of his Aunt May (just a trick), his clone (the Scarlet Spider), the "death" of Peter and Mary Jane's unborn child. Recently Osborn was finally revealed to the world to be the Green Goblin after a battle between Spider-Man and Luke Cage.
Thunderbolts
As yet to be revealed, Osborn managed to become the Director for the Thunderbolts. He became responsible for putting together a new team of former villains in order to track down and apprehend superhumans that refuse to sign the Super-Human Registration Act. The members he gathered include former Thunderbolt members Moonstone, Songbird, Radioactive Man and Swordsman (Andreas Strucker), along with new members Venom (Mac Gargan), Penance (Robbie Baldwin), and Bullseye. He continues to be obsessed with Spider-Man.
Powers
Green Goblin possesses superhuman strength, stamina, reflexes, durability, agility and a healing factor. He has a genius-level intellect, though he is also insane.
He uses a lot of self-made goblin-themed weapons and gadgetry, and a goblin glider with various weaponry.
Phil Urich
Phil Urich was the fourth (or fifth, depending on if you want to count Niels Van Adder), and only good Green Goblin
Phil Urich discovered one of the late Harry Osborne's secret lairs. He discovered that Harry, before his death, had been working on new goblin gear, notably a new goblin suit and glider. He would start parading around as the Green Goblin and getting into fights with super-villains. Some believed Phil to be as maniacal as the rest of the goblins, but he claims he was only doing it for kicks. Phil's costume would later become damaged during the Onslaught saga. Repairing it was beyond is scope, and after getting beaten without his powers, he finally decided to give up being the Green Goblin.
Phil possessed no powers, but the goblin suit possessed technology which augmented Phil's physical abilities. Phil's repertoire mainly consisted of the same Halloween-themed gadgets that the other goblins used. However, new gadgets included a device in the mask which produced sonic screams, and devices in the boots which kept him in the air for a short time if separated from his glider.
Alternate Realities
Earth-295 (Age of Apocalypse)
Known as Red in the alternate reality known as Age of Apocalypse Norman Osborn was a member of the Marauders, along with teammates Arcade, Kingpin, and Owl. The four villains were sent by Apocalypse to destroy the land of Wakanda. Though they were able to murder Black Panther and destroy much of the land, Red's life was cut short by Hawkeye, who blew him up with an explosive missile.
As with the rest of the Marauders, Red was equipped with wrist weapons and "air-steppers", boot attachments that allowed him near-flight.
Earth-1610 (Ultimate Universe)
Norman Osborn, owner of Osborn Industries (sometimes referred to as OsCorp) was trying to develop the next super soldier formula. After witnessing Peter Parker get bitten by OsCorp’s genetically altered spider and the subsequent effects it had on him, Osborn decided to recreate the accident in a controlled environment with himself as the test subject. The experiment was a disaster. Osborn's lab was destroyed and he was transformed into a mindless, goblin-like creature with the ability to generate flames from his hands. Roaming the streets of New York, he grabbed a purple cloak from a dumpster. He then attacked his family; burning down his house and killing his wife. Osborn’s son Harry was able to escape, traumatized by the event.
The next day the Goblin attacked Midtown high school. Spider-Man arrived on the scene and the two of them started fighting. Although still unable to speak the Goblin recognized that Spider-Man was Peter Parker. Their subsequent battle took them to a bridge where the Goblin was then shot down by police; his body falling into the river and disappearing.
Osborn later resurfaced with his mind intact and the ability to transform in and out of his Goblin form by injecting himself with OZ (his super soldier formula). He then attempted to blackmail Spider-Man into killing Nick Fury. However with assistance from Fury himself and SHIELD Spider-Man defied Osborn. The Goblin making good on his threat kidnapped Mary Jane Watson and brought her to the Queensboro Bridge. Ignoring Spider-Man’s pleas the Goblin threw Mary Jane off the bridge. Spider-Man barely managed to rescue her before resuming his fight with the Goblin with backup from SHIELD. Losing the battle, the Goblin retreated back to his penthouse where he then pumped himself full of Oz, increasing his size and strength and further deteriorating his mind. Spider-Man arrived shortly after and the two continued their fight. Harry walked in on them during the battle discovering both their identities. He pleaded for his father to stop but to no avail. Taking matters into his own hands Harry then drove a window pane into the Goblin’s back, changing him into his human form and knocking him out. Harry then passed out and he and his father were taken into SHIELD custody.
Osborn was imprisoned with four other super criminals who were also captured by Spider-Man; Doctor Octopus, Kraven The Hunter, Electro and the Sandman. Thanks to his new ability to transform into the Green Goblin without the need of an OZ injection and with the help of Doctor Octopus, the Goblin escaped SHIELD custody with the four other criminals. Together they then managed to break into a SHIELD facility and kidnap Spider-Man who had been brought there for assistance. Osborn once again blackmailed Spider-Man into joining him; seeing him as his true son. Out of fear of what could happen to his friends and family Spider-Man accepted. The newly formed Ultimate Six then attacked the White House where the Ultimates were waiting for them. A battle commenced on the White House lawn during which Spider-Man turned on the Goblin, having learned from Captain America that his Aunt was safe in SHIELD custody. One by one each member of Osborn’s group was defeated until only he was left standing. To get the Goblin to surrender Nick Fury sent Harry onto the battlefield who then begged his father to stop. For a moment it seemed like Harry was getting through to his father, until Iron Man fired on the Goblin causing him to attack. He was then shot down by SHIELD and taken into custody.
