Everybody’s favorite pale-skinned, cloak-wearing embodiment of divine vengeance got his turn.
Soon, everybody’s favorite grotesquely-disfigured, occult-encountering cowboy gets a turn, too.
And, after him, everybody’s favorite hot-tempered, left-leaning, goatee-rocking emerald archer gets his.
Hot on the heels of the Spectre’s spot in the JUSITCE LEAGUE: CRISIS ON TWO EARTHS DVD (and the announcement that Jonah Hex would, likewise, get animated), comes the revelation that Warner Bros. animation’s giving Green Arrow his own SHOWCASE ‘toon. The scoop comes from Alan Burnett’s interview at Comics Continuum, wherein he also reveals that there’s a fourth Showcase in the works, but - - that diabolical tease - - he won’t reveal which character, just yet.
This whole SHOWCASE razzmatazz is smart, in my eyes. Certain characters in the DC mythos work splendidly in the comics, but they’re either too strange (like the Spectre) or don’t have a strong enough gimmick (Green Arrow) to sustain their own feature ‘toon. GA’s got his trick arrows and his political bent, but that’s not as easy to grasp as, oh say, a space cop with a special ring that can… construct (see, I’m learning) anything he thinks of. Also, the PG-13 ratings of these DVDs allows for edgier content, as is GA's wont.
My curiosity’s been piqued, as well. Steve Niles wrote the Spectre short and Joe Lansdale’s writing Jonah Hex’s. Will WB Animation follow that streak and land another comics writer to script Oliver Queen’s adventure? If so, who would do it? Judd Winnick, perhaps? Maybe Chuck Dixon? Or even Denny O’Neal?
Who do you, oh maniacal Comic Vine community, want to write this adventure? And, while we’re at it, what other characters deserve their own SHOWCASE?
