Green Arrow plus Guest Stars Galore

This is my first review so be gentle.

Because this is my first review I feel that it is a good time to try to do this in a less traditional way.   I remember the first time I ever saw Green Arrow, it was the premier of Justice League Unlimited.   Seeing someone dressed like Robin Hood take down some robbers with bows and arrows made him an interesting character.   By the end of the episode he took down a giant monster, a feat that seemed larger than life.   Once I started reading Green Arrow comics I couldn’t stop, I have all the issues of Green Arrow Vol 3, Green Arrow and Black Canary, and a fair amount of Green Arrow Vol 2.   I say all that because I want it to be clear that I have a deep love of this character and that’s why I choose him for my first review.

First up the standard cover looks great, it’s a nice continuation of the covers that DC has been putting out this month.   GA is striking a pretty sweet pose, and the logo looks great.   If you are able too I also suggest the variant cover, DC posted an image of it on the Source back in December and I have been looking forward to it immediately after seeing it.

Anyways onto the actual issue itself.   Honestly if you want to jump in and start reading Green Arrow this may be the best place for you to start.   It’s the start of a new arc, and everything from the powers of the forest to Galahad’s story seem to being set up to answer.   The interior artwork looks really good, Galahad and GA have a very distinct look that really fits with the background of the forest, and yet Mr. Terrific and Doctor Mid-Nite seem to fit perfectly.   That leads me to the guest stars of the issue.   Poison Ivy has a cameo, Mr. Terrific, Lois Lane, Doctor Mid-Nite, and Etrigan all show up for a speaking role, and there someone else who shows up on the final page that I don’t want to spoil for you.   If you want a fun challenge try to find the reference to a classic Green Arrow author.   It’s not that hard but it may take a read through or two.   Overall I give this issue a 4.5/5, good for a Green Arrow fan but maybe not that good for a non-Green Arrow fan.

    Good Things:

The character interactions seems real and interesting

    I loved the artwork

The line up of guest stars is impressive

    Bad Things:

I’m not sure that some of the characters are necessary (Lois Lane/Poison Ivy)

The forest really needs to get explained fast.   Affecting technology, magic and Green Lantern energy seems a little much.

The ongoing saga of Green Arrow turns off on a sudden tangent as Etrigan and Jason Blood inexplicably drop by the forest and other guest appearances flood in from all sides for no apparent purpose.  Honestly, I am at a total loss as to what story J.T. Krul is trying to tell here. I don't believe he knows either, because he is all over the place. Lois Lane shows up in a scene to give us exposition on the state of Star City and its relation to the magical forest that has sprung up. I do not get it...
