Sensing something great is at hand, Grandmother Arrow tasks her grandson, Running Hare, to be on the watch for a hawk carrying a fish across the desert. After some time Running Hare reports to her that he has seen the sign. She orders him to bring his sister Redfeather. He leaves and she begins a ceremony.

Redfeather arrives and Grandmother Arrow asks her granddaughter to stop moving the tribe to higher ground and to go help her friend Whisky Jill. She gives Redfeather a bow and a single arrow and challenges her to know the right time to use it. Redfeather departs.

After Redfeather leaves, Grandmother Arrow performs a meditation ritual. She senses a change in the air and departs. She finds Jill and the two exchange barbs. Grandmother Arrow is impressed that Jill has found Rod, the Great Diviner. She warns her that something bad is going to happen. The two women hear a scuffle and find Redfeather injured and Rod missing. Grandmother Arrow informs Jill that this will be her last test to becoming a true Hawaiian witch. She stays with Redfeather while Jill goes to find Rod.
