Glory #24 - Once and Future, Part Two: The Way It Is

3

In this brutal issue, Glory wants to put together a new army to take down her enemies.

This is my first time reading any Glory book. I never read the series when it first came out, and I missed the first issue of the relaunch.

The Good

Give Ross Campbell (artist) and Ms,Shatia Hamilton (colors) some sort of award. The art on this book is fantastic. It has a very distinct, cool look to it. The images have heavy inked outlines, and what I liked most about the art was the colors. This book contains flat colors with mild shadows that give the art a bit of animated flavor.

The opening pages of this book are really cool. It's a great set-up for the character, it's ultra-violent, and I loved the art. Those first three pages tell you a lot about the world and the character as Glory discovers her mother is dead in her father's arms and proceeds to beat them within an inch of his life. Now, that's an awesome opening.

This issue really has my interest peaked, especially with the ending where we discover that Glory's mother is actually alive, even though she was presumed dead in the opening. It makes me want to keep reading the book, even though it seems like a major plot point established in the book is completely undone.

The Bad

I have no clue what's going on. I do not know anything about Glory, and even though her history is explained, I still felt like I was missing out on something. Basically, I felt incredibly lost the entire issue. I wasn't sure why Glory was in this person's house. A person who seems to come from the real world, while the world of Glory seems entirely alien. What's going on here?

While the beginning and the end of this issue were dynamite, I felt the rest of the book dragged a bit. Sure, the art was great to look at, but I felt like there wasn't much for me here.

The Verdict

I'm really on the fence with this issue. I loved the art and some of the action scenes in this book, and I loved the book ending with the plot, but I felt lost the entire time I read the issue, and for a new reader, that's not a great thing. I give this book a mild recommendation, and I truly hope this is a series I can keep reading and not feel lost.
