G.I. Joe was a classic cartoon. Since it was on at the same time as Transformers, it's only natural that it too will get the live action treatment. We've already seen some images for the movie. Some have been quickly removed shortly after being posted. I saw this (first) image over at Topless Robot. I do have to say that I have some serious doubts about this. The only good thing I can think of is Ray Parks is playing Snake Eyes. Other than that, I'm really scared.
Maybe the Baroness doesn't look too bad but what the heck is up with Storm Shadow's costume?
I can't tell which will be worse, this movie orDragonball Evolution. I'm a little sad inside now.
G.I. Joe
Team » G.I. Joe appears in 1182 issues.
G.I. Joe is America's elite fighting force. They are the best trained counter-terrorist team. The only defense against the villainous terrorist organization, Cobra.
G.I. Joe Movie...Storm Shadow and Baroness?
"Praying may not be enough. We might want to think about sacrifices too."Would you happen to have a Lamb anywhere?
"Where is the snake on the sword? .......where is the baroness' glasses.......whack!"Contacts?
lol
They're not using the Cobra or GI Joe symbols & costumes, Duke makes me think they're going with the X-Men treatment all leather automatically = super cool. Storm Shadow looks like a higher end cosplay costume. Might as well call the movie something else if they're afraid of embracing what GI Joe & Cobra has been since the 60s. Why are they running away from that? Do they think its cheesy? Would it be so awful to incorporate a Cobra symbol in there on the Baroness?
I know the plot is supposedly taking place while Cobra is forming & Cobra Commander is going to be a normal guy before putting a mask on, etc. so maybe thats why there's no Cobra symbol. Something tells me Cobra Commander will be Dr. Doomified a la the FF movies. Not particularly excited about that plot though. I want a giant terrorist organization with inexplicable access to unlimited fighter jets, jetpacks, and manpower. I want ridiculous characters with ridiculous codenames, friggin laser guns, stupid giant explosions, and just once I want a comic related movie that doesn't hold my hand through an origin story for 1/3 of the movie. I don't care about Cobra before it became Cobra, I don't want to see Destro before he got a chromedome, leave it a mystery. Inevetably they're going to sell it as a "turn your brain off action flick", so why bother with the explanations.
What's really interesting is Storm Shadow wearing lace-ups. Guess that's the latest fashion for today's ninjas.
Personally I think they should have stuck a little closer to the original costumes. If they did them right I dont think they would look cheesy....in fact I thik the all black is overdone and cheesy.
Anyways I disagree with you about the plot and origin story part...I think the reason that Batman Begins....TDK....and Iron Man where my favorite comic movie translations is that A.) They made them realistic like they could happen in real life. B.) They were at least semi-serious instead of gimmicky C.) They focused a lot on plot and story elements and not quite so much on brainless action. D.) The origin stories were plausible and once again oriented in realism and told audiences what they needed to know.
The story and plot should be believeable and grounded in real life....the characters should seem deep and realistic...everything should seem very real...I would even go as far as making the costumes seem like something people in the military would really wear, all the while givin them that personal flair that sets them apart. Honestly the costumes thye are wearing right now remind me of the Rock in DOOM.
The action and the characters abilities/personalities are what should be larger than life and stay true to G.I. Joe while allowing for it to seem realistic. I have high hopes.
"Personally I think they should have stuck a little closer to the original costumes. If they did them right I dont think they would look cheesy....in fact I thik the all black is overdone and cheesy. That works when the origin story is actually interesting and its one character you're dealing with there. GI Joe/Cobra you've got a dozen main characters, each with different origins a lot of which are probably irrelevant to the actual plot of the movie. As a whole, both factions' origins aren't particularly interesting. Whats interesting is the mystery & the struggle between the two. Why doesn't Snake Eyes talk, why does Storm Shadow hate him, why does Cobra Commander wear a helmet. None of those questions should be answered but the audience should want to know the answer. In that respect i'd like it to be more like Star Wars, throw the audience into the universe, accept that there's a bad guy with a funky looking helmet that talks funny, a bunch of technology that doesn't exist, and don't let that get in the way of making a good movie. Let there be some mystery to it, we don't need to know how Han Solo became Han Solo or Boba Fett became Boba Fett, if anything it makes it less interesting and more straightforward.

Very good analogy...however there arent very many movies that have ever really been able to successfully pull tht off....Star Wars is one of the very few and I am a HUGE original Trilogy fan by the way. I am just saying lets not be ridiulous and gimmicky like most crappy video game/ comic book big screen translations....and I do agree that most of their origin stories arent important, although Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes origin story could be a movie in itself. However I do think we need somewhat of a story of how they all came together. I can see this being amazing if they do it right. Something like Iron Man was this year.
I think they got Baroness down really good.
Storm Shadow would look really good if he just didnt have those goofy tails on his jacket.
Hopefully SE gets a few small changes although overall I cant complain too much. Maybe make the suit more like Batman's in TDK with the seperation in plates of armor instead of the more bulky rubbery look. But thats just me.
Everyone else looks pretty decent so far, Destro wasnt what I was expecting, but I think he could still be cool.
