Remember when Variety was reporting that Paul Feig, the director of Bridesmaids, was being considered to direct and write a female Ghostbusters movie? Well, it's happening! The director just made the announcement via twitter and says he's co-writing the script with Katie Dippold (The Heat, Parks and Recreation, MADtv).

    No Caption Provided

There's no official word yet on whether it'll be a total reboot or a follow-up that takes place sometime after Ghostbusters 2, but it's worth noting that Variety's previous report claimed it would be a reboot. Now comes the fun part: which actresses do you want to see in the movie? Go ahead and listen to the Ghostbusters theme while you think about it and then share your casting ideas in the comments section below. If you want to get your Ghostbusters fix while we wait for more news, you can obviously watch the movies again, but we also recommend checking out Mass Hysteria!, IDW's latest Ghostbusters story.

I kind of like this idea actually. It's clever compared to most remakes these days. I would love to see Melissa McCarthy in this.

At this point, I really just do not care. The time for a sequel/reboot is long gone at this point. Plus, I agree about the comedy. The original was great scary comedy, not just straight up comedy, which I feel is what the team here will give us.

And Dan Akroyd and Ernie Hudson as guest spots. Dan, because he is obsessed with the franchise, and Ernie because he has alimony to pay.

Instead of remaking Ghostbusters, I wish they would have one of those serious horror movies, like the Conjuring or Paranormal Activity types, end with Bill Murray, Ernie Hudgson, and Dan Ackroyd busting down the door and suck up whatever is haunting the house. Be 100% serious and scary until that moment. I think it would be one of the greatest twists in movie history.

Melissa McCarthy as almost certainly going to be in this, which makes me nervous. She's really hit or miss for me. Then again, Paul Feig seems to be one of the few people who knows who to use her well.

As it stands, I kind of wonder if they'll be able to pull people like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler into a movie like this. I could see a lot of people being hesitant to take on a sequel a couple of decades late to one of the best movies ever made.

I'd be okay with that cast. I just don't want another MM movie where she's just doing outrages things that people find funny just because shes fat. If shes is in it I'd like her to play a more serious role with comedic elements.

What sucks is we could have had a cool new Ghostbusters with the original cast passing the torch to a new Ghostbusters team, but because they gave Dan and the team such a difficult time getting this movie made chances are it'll be a reboot and have a cast being one-sided (all women) written to be like the heat (God I hated that movie). I hope I'm wrong though and this is a continuation and the director respects the source material.

No Ivan Reitman or any of the surviving original cast, then why bother to make it? They where this franchise and without them passing the torch to there daughters or something it seems kind of pointless to make.

Ghostbusters is my favorite movie. I wish they would just let it stand on its own. It doesn't need a reboot, it doesn't need a sequel.

I'm not against them using an all women cast, but will refuse to see it if they cast Melissa McCarthy. She isn't funny. I don't know how this will do.

I'd love to see Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, and Emma Stone with Jessica Williams (The Daily Show) or Kerry Washington (Scandal)...with Charlene Yi (House) running the firehouse.

Including Melissa McCarthy (to me) would be a deal-breaker.

Sounds cool. I like the idea. Just as long as the film doesn't try to duplicate what made the original franchise successful, and instead tries to create its own spin on the concept, I'm sure it'll be great.

    I'm looking forward to it.

I've got two little girls that absolutely love watching the Ghostbusters movies and the Real Ghostbusters cartoons. It'll be nice for them to have female role models within the franchise.

Also, I'd go with Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Leslie Mann as my team.

Well, I was pretty excited when they were talking about a sequel with the original cast training the next generation, but this just sounds awful. If it's going to be a reboot, I'd just rather they not do it.

Also, why does it have to be all-female? Couldn't we have a mix of guys and girls? I think that would be more interesting.

Whether it's a reboot or a sequel, I think this could work. The Ghostbusters concept is a fun idea that I imagine could be explored in plenty of ways. Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig could be good. It would be nice if there were roles for some of the original cast, be it cameos, new roles or returning as the original characters.

Ok, I agree with most of the posters here, why does there need to be a new Ghostbusters movie? The original two were great and there is no need to add any more movies to the series. But I guess this is just another sign that Hollywood is full of unimaginative, non-creative hacks who couldn't come up with an original concept if it hit them in the face.

With that said, I truly cannot see an all female cast pulling this off. Not to say that there aren't funny women out there, but I can't really think of any who can pull off funny in a sci-fi story line. Many people here have mentioned Amy Poehler as a possible cast member, I actually would not want to see her do a Ghostbusters movie, I think she would be the weak link in it. Her brand of comedy is great in Parks and Recreation, but it would not work even a little bit in a Ghostbusters movie. I would love to come up with some good suggestions for a female cast, but I really can't think of any women I would want to see do this movie.

Ultimately without Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd writing the script I worry it will just fall flat. His irreverent brand of humor is what made the original two movies so good. The cast was also comprised of actors who could pull off the roles those two created. I guess we shall see if this actually gets made. If it does I will likely just wait until it comes out on DVD to see it.

Hmm! And here I thought there were at least three movies made whenever the originals were made. I really know next to nothing about the franchise except I saw the first one once.

Anyway, for good or bad, if they went the comedy route with an all female cast, I'd be surprised if Melissa McCarthy wasn't in it. And probably Wanda Sykes.
