Due For Demolition
Here`s a blast from the past, an early installment from the first volume of Ghost Rider. To be honest, Ghost Rider was a series that never really appealed to me. I liked some of the `Marvel Monsters` from that period in the 70`s - alas, Johnny Blaze wasn`t one of them...
This issue I found in an old junk shop, and for pennies, and I couldn`t pass a Bronze Age Marvel up. And so, faithful readers, that`s how it`s ended up in my reviews.
Remember those auto-crazed, cop car chasing movies in the 70`s? That`s what this reminds me of. Like Dukes of Hazzard meets Gumball Rally, or some-such - Blaze is picked up by the cops, who rough him up a bit. He`s rescued by a mysterious benefactor, Mr. Jensen. Jensen will get the law off Blazes` back if he accepts employment as a rider in Jensen`s Demolition Derby event.
Death Stalks Demolition Derby also has Blaze tussling with the affections of a couple of admirers, blondie Rocky and Indian gal, Linda Littletrees...
The intrigue in the story is mildly appealing, I guess. It has that 70`s feel, not just the Mooney/Colletta art, it`s the dune-buggy, chopper motorbike, hard-nose bigoted cop versus bad kid with a good heart thing.
This is where Ghost Rider belonged, would it sell now? Nice bit of retro, but sorry, I remain unconvinced...
