Origin

London-born and a former boxer, Detective Sergeant George Carter was a member of the Flying Squad, the section of the Metropolitan Police charged with stopping armed robberies and other violent crimes. He was partnered with Detective Inspector Jack Regan.

Creation

Played by Dennis Waterman, Carter was introduced to viewers in a one-off play on Armchair Theatre in 1974, the success of which saw the adventures of the character and his compatriots turned into an ongoing series, The Sweeney, a year later. The show ran for four series.
