     Don't cross these guys.
     Don't cross these guys.

Having made many rounds throughout C2E2’s convention floor, I can attest that there was a lot of love for Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows’ series, CROSSED, on display. Sure, there were a lot more Ghostbusters walking around, but I saw more than a few fans shuffling about with their faces “crossed” with red paint or wearing the masks Avatar Press was handing out. One of the publisher’s announcements at the show concerned a movie adaption of CROSSED being fast-tracked by Kevin Spacey’s Trigger St. Productions.  Similar to KICK-ASS’ business model, they’re raising independent financing with a screenplay that Ennis is actually writing. While THE BOYS and PREACHER have been in development for years, this looks like it might be making it to theaters first. And I’m sure that, just like KICK-ASS needed to, they’re rising their own money because the content’s surely going to be too edgy for any studio to approve.

CROSSED is a twist on the zombie Apocalypse story. It follows a pack of survivors on the run from an army of maniacs. These aren’t the undead, though, but infected humans whose inhibitions have been totally eroded, making them indulge in their most perverse impulses. If you’ve read anything from Avatar Press, you’ll know that no punches have been pulled.

As a personal aside, I’d like to mention that I got to meet Garth Ennis while I was at the show and let him know what an influence his work has had on my own writing. He was a real class act.  He’d just got done with a very long signing, but still took out some out to talk to me. I hope this willlbe the first of many projects to get him wider notice in the whole entertainment continuum.

While he may be a classy guy, Crossed has no redeeming qualities in my eyes.  I went through the first few issues at my LCS and after i was done i felt a little queasy.  Not in a "good" way that some may attest to a horror movie, but in a "that was gross and why would someone buy this" way.

So the non-zombies rape, kill, and carry on.  There's a guy named "Horsec*ck" who kills people with (what else) a horsec*ck.  There's a group of survivors.  Why would i care about any of this?

Read the story through once, that was enough. Nevertheless this will be popular just because of what it is, redeeming qualities or not.

True, Crossed isnt his best work, but I've loved everything else the man has done. his Punisher runs were great and I loved Preacher. I havent read The Boys though.

People seem to think crossed is all about horrific deeds being inflicted on others. I read the whole series, was it violent and disgusting? Yes. What people seem to forget is Garth Ennis has done horribly violent and disgusting comics before. Not to this extent true, but in the past he's done similar things in humorous manners. Crossed is completely serious and dark. At no point in this book does he make these things seem funny. It's a very bleak story, people seem not to be able to get past what the crossed do in this book which is understandable but that isn't the focus of the story. It's the worst in the first few issues after that you have a story about a group of people some of which that dislike each other greatly having to work together to survive. To me a big part of this book is about the fact that sometimes surviving isn't enough, you have got to still remain human and have compassion. Which would be an easy thing to loose in a world like the one depicted in Crossed. I'm not a fan of it because of the gore, I'm a fan because at it's heart it's a great story about a struggle to stay human and not in the literal sense.

@Vortex13: You make a great point, and I know I'm wasting time complaining, but once Crossed comes out and get good reviews, it will make rape and mutilation a norm for the film industry. Maybe I'm being far too paranoid about this but crossed makes saw look kid friendly and people are liking gore-fests more and more. Look at Dark Knight and how the Joker was more appreciated, not just because Ledger died, but because kids wanted to see a psycho gangster kill people in the worst way. I'm sorry but I just think Crossed, as a movie, is a bad idea.

Kick-Ass is underperforming at the box office, and the blame seems to be falling on the R-rating and squickiness of Hit GIrl.  Of course, Crossed is a different beast than Kick-Ass; it's not a superhero movie so it's not tied to comics and there's not as much of a knee-jerk expectation that it's for young teens.  Crossed could be billed as just your standard zombie gorefest, and zombies still sell.  But what I'm getting at is that given the performances of both Watchmen and now Kick-Ass, I'm guessing studios may be thinking twice about comic-adaptations that they can't squish down to a PG-13.

My fear would be that little other than the title of the series actually makes the transision. They'll turn it into another run of the mill zombie flick.

I think this is a great move for Ennis.  I think personally that Ennis could possibly see the kind of success that Frank Millar has in the film industry.  There is a lot of potential there.

Yes Ennis is a sick f@ck yet the book was addicting and I enjoyed it even though I needed a puke bucket to read it like The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs

Vortex13 really nailed it on the head with the deeper themes, in this story and many other "zombie" like stories the main struggle, other than survival, in the dark times with the horrific acts that are happening, is to try to remain human. If you keep this in mind this is a really solid comic I think, good character development, which of course is primarily driven by the horrific acts being commited. Worth at least a read through once.

But of course the majority of people that hear about this film without this knowledge will probably just take it for another zombie/Hills Have Eyes movie

It's kind of like The Walking Dead, but with lots of extra horror porn in full color, because it's Garth Ennis.
