Ganthet

Ganthet is a comic book character that first appeared in Ganthet's Tale #1

Once a member of the Guardians of the Universe, Ganthet has now been exiled from Oa along with Sayd, a fellow Oa'n. They both now are founders of the Blue Lanterns, using the blue spectrum of Hope.

Arguably one of the most powerful and influential members of the Guardians of the Universe, the founders and leaders of the Green Lantern Corps, Ganthet has held an important place in the history of the Corps. Ganthet is the oldest living Guardian of the Universe, and the only surviving member of the original Maltusians to travel to Oa from Maltus. Many believe him to be the most powerful of the Guardians, a statement certainly true after their demise at Parallax's hands, though the effect of their rebirth at Kyle Rayner's hands have had an unknown affect on his power. He is a member of the Quintessence, a group of near-omnipotent beings who oversee events on Earth. They also count Zeus, Highfather, and Shazam among their number. Ganthet is the Guardian that most of the corps had the easiest time identifying with, and also seems to have the most connections outside of the corps itself. Yet the beginnings of his story are the same as that of the other Guardians.

Origins

The Guardians describe themselves as beings so old, that when the first proteins were beginning to form life amongst the planets in the Universe, they had already long since had a thriving civilization on the planet Maltus. Originally blue skinned humanoids, the people of Maltus were immortals that had created an advanced civilization which was powered by scientific wonders unmatched in the Universe. Over a space of eons, the Maltusian people had developed powerful telepathic and cosmic powers. Their civilization was a paradise, until the greedy ambitions of one of their finest scientists led to a cosmic accident; the ramifications of which would have a profound impact on life throughout the Universe. The scientist Krona, who was obsessed with knowledge, had created a time machine. Against the wishes and warnings of his fellow Maltusians, he traveled to the beginning of time to witness the "Big Bang".

As a result of his arrogant disobedience, Krona unleashed an explosion of anti-matter which wiped out billions of years of time and was also responsible for the creation of evil throughout the Universe. Krona's rash act further resulted in the creation of the anti-matter Universe, the Multiverse and the fracturing of time resulting in countless alternate dimensions. Feeling responsible for their brother’s actions, the Maltusians banished Krona, turning the madman into a being of pure energy sent on a wandering course throughout the cosmos. More seriously, the Maltusians knew that, as it had in the past, the Universe would one day contract upon itself to be reborn by a new "big bang". Due to the anti-matter unleashed by Krona, the universe was deprived of sufficient matter necessary to ignite a new "big bang". As a result of Krona's actions, the universe and all existence would one day simply die out, never to be reborn.

Feeling responsible for this, the Maltusians relocated to the planet Oa, located at "the center of the Universe", and became the Guardians of the Universe. Their goal was simple: combat evil and create an orderly universe. And they acted quickly on that goal. During this transitory period, the Maltusians' appearance changed as they adapted to their new life as Oans.

Ganthet's Tale

Hal Jordan is asked to help Ganthet battle a renegade Guardian, Dawlakispokpok (or Dawly, for short), who is attempting to use a time machine to change history. Dawly tries to use his own time machine to thrust Krona to the end of time, preventing him from following through on his plan. While battling Dawly, however, it turned out that Dawly was responsible for the mishap that caused the Universe to be 'born old'. When Dawly's family is brought before the Guardians, Ganthet shields Jordan's mind, allowing him to retain his memory of one of the biggest secrets of the Guardians.

Emerald Twilight

After the destruction of Coast City, the subsequent insanity of Hal Jordan, and the destruction of the Central Power Battery, the Guardians decide to focus all of their remaining power into Ganthet. As such, he becomes the last Guardian. Ganthet creates a new Green Lantern ring from Jordan's ring, which had been crushed by the former Green Lantern after murdering Sinestro, and goes to Earth. He appears before Kyle Rayner, a struggling artist and hastily hands him the ring, muttering "You shall have to do".

It is later revealed that Ganthet first went to Guy Gardner but Gardner turned him down. During Rayner's first few months as Green Lantern, Ganthet is less than satisfied with Rayner and attempts to take back the ring. Rayner eventually earns the respect of Ganthet by facing Parallax without his ring.

Ion and Restoration of the Corps

When Rayner briefly becomes the godlike Ion, he possessed more power than Hal Jordan did as Parallax. Realizing that he can not continue as Ion without losing his humanity, Kyle travels to the recently restored Oa to recharge the Central Power Battery. By doing so, he creates a new set of Guardians, this time as small children (both male and female), with the intent that Ganthet will look after them and teach them how to be better Guardians than their predecessors.

Rayner later traveled to the edge of the Universe, where he learned about Parallax. Telling Ganthet what he found, the Guardian concluded that Parallax altered his memory following his escape, and told him the whole tale of Parallax's origin and imprisonment. Ganthet instructed Kyle to retrieve Hal Jordan's corpse, hoping to resurrect Jordan. Green Lantern Kilowog, under Parallax's influence, tried to kill Rayner, but Ganthet managed to stop him and sever Parallax's control over Kilowog, Guy Gardner, and John Stewart. Once Jordan and the Spectre expelled Parallax from Jordan's soul, the parasite bonded to Ganthet himself. But not before Ganthet sent a beacon of Oan energy to guide Hal Jordan's soul to his body. Resurrected, Hal Jordan then led the other four Green Lanterns in defeating the Parallax-possessed Ganthet, returning Parallax to the Central Power Battery on Oa.

Following these events, all the Guardians are aged to adulthood and are just as cold and manipulative as before. The only change is that there are now female Guardians as well as male. Ganthet, of course, still retains a sense of individuality amongst the Guardians, believing that they should retain their emotions.

Sinestro Corps War

During the Sinestro Corps War, Ganthet and a female Guardian named Sayd are banished from the council for feeling emotion.

Just as Parallax, now back in his monstrous form, attacks the Lanterns for freeing Kyle Rayner, Ganthet and the other guardian, Sayd, arrive and draw Parallax into four separate lanterns (Hal, Kyle, John, and Guy's, respectively). Ganthet explains to the Lanterns that he and Sayd have been expelled from the Guardians of the Universe. Ganthet's final act as Guardian is to make a new power ring for Kyle. He asks if Kyle is willing to downgrade himself to a normal Green lantern, which Kyle quickly agrees to. The four men then take their lanterns and hearing the Sinestro Corps oath, recite the classic Green Lantern Oath, and depart to confront Sinestro's Corps.

Ganthet and Sayd also explain to the four about the emotional energy spectrum created at the start of the Universe that is separated into 7 colors: green(willpower), yellow(fear), violet(love), red(rage), indigo(compassion), orange(greed), and blue(hope), each representing different forms of emotion, with green being the most center balanced of the energies. The further at one end an energy color is, the more wild and difficult it's power is to control, leading to a corrupting influence over the user. Ganthet also reveals that in the coming future, each color will have its own forces like the Lantern Corps, and these forces will fight against the others in a battle across the Universe that will lead into the event known as "The Blackest Night", the worst of the hidden prophecies in the Book of Oa.

Birth of Hope

At the end of the Sinestro War, Ganthet and Sayd are currently living on the planet Odym, where they harness the emotional blue energy spectrum of hope. The two Guardians make plans to create another intergalactic police force in order to aid the Green Lantern Corps in the prophesied "War of Light".  By doing this, they create blue power rings which they give to those beings who inspire hope. Both Guardians have evolved into two new beings, capable of bringing hope to others and each other, as they are also apparently romantically involved.

Creating their first ring, Ganthet and Sayd travelled to Sector 1 searching for the perfect candidate to join their corps. They found him in Saint Bro'dee Walker, whom they took back to Odym. They spent several days with him teaching him about the powers of the Light of Hope. They also explained the drawbacks if he were to join their corps, before finally giving the choice to him. He accepted and they set him forth to bring hope to the Universe.  Saint Walker would go on to search Sector 2 for a candidate, a process that would continue until their Corps was fully manned. When he brought Warth to them, Ganthet and Sayd then repeated the same training process.

While they were training Warth, Ganthet became aware of the events in the universe. Knowing Sinestro's fate, he sent Saint Walker to save him from the combined forces of the Green and Red Lanterns. He also hoped for him to bring back Hal Jordan, whom Ganthet had explained was to lead the Blue Lantern Corps. When Saint returned with Jordan, it was just as Warth's education was finishing and he made the choice to join Ganthet's new Corps. Ganthet then spoke with Jordan, attempting to explain why Sinestro needed to be saved and also spared. He was unsuccessful in swaying Jordan, though he agreed to work with his Corps. Ganthet then ordered Warth and Saint Walker to continue educating Hal during their mission, readying him for his future role.
