I remember reading about someone mentioning and now I have to know,

    No Caption Provided

What is that thing? It seems to be part of his armor, but I mean is there a name for what it is? I don't even care that it's useless or whatever, I just want to know just what the heck it is?

Although if it did have a purpose that'd be nice.

We were talking about the strange 90's fashion in head-framing gear just the other day in Which X-Men characters need a costume update?. It's something that quite a few other -Men characters wore (like Havok). I guess Gambit didn't get the memo to say 'It's not 1991 anyone; Welcome to 2012'.

It's a head condom. It's so Rogue can kiss his head and he won't get hurt. I don't actually know if it's actually called " head condom ", but as far I'm concerned it is now.

It's an artistic convenience.  Not every one has been able to figure out how that particular hairstyle somehow connects to his head.

Gambit's not the only one who wears that. It shows up all over in the 90's, but i think it first got started in the 50's with Flash Gordon, and you can see it in stuff way more recent.

From Left to right: Flash Gordon 07. Retro Flash Gordon. Random concept art. Exoforce (90s cartoon). and Jor-el from a superman comic (i think)

I'm super curious to what you call this thing, it must have a name.

Gambit wasn't the first character to have the faceless mask thing, but he has become the most famous for it. Angel, Rusty Collins, Havok, Beast, Cyclops, Jean, and many other X-Men have worn something like that as well.
