He's from New Orleans which is predominantly French.

@ownsin: He is Cajun and comes from the Louisiana region, I believe.  I read somewhere that the Cajuns originally came from French Canada. I am not sure if that is true though.

@Edamame:
"Cajun" is a corruption of "Acadian", Acadia being the collective name for the French colonies in Maritime Canada. Most of them were deported after the Seven Years' War when they refused to sign allegiance to Britain, and a lot made their way to Spanish Louisiana.

However, Gambit's accent is wildly inaccurate for New Orleans.

It's apart of his character, who he is. Too bad. He wouldn't be the same without it.

Do you like his accent lol?
#7 Posted by CellphoneGirl (18799 posts) - - Show Bio
@ownsin: Yes i do, but i've known him with his accent since i was like three, when watching the 90's x-men, so i'm used to it lol. I also did take two years in French :P lol
#8 Posted by ownsin (142 posts) - - Show Bio
@xxCellPhoneGirlxx:  So you actually would prefer him speaking Cajun than rather speaking the normal english accent xD?
#9 Posted by CellphoneGirl (18799 posts) - - Show Bio
@ownsin: Hmm yes. >.> Because it's so cool to read how other people talk :D Like how Rogue talks with her southern accent :P
#10 Posted by ownsin (142 posts) - - Show Bio
@xxCellPhoneGirlxx: aha i see xD, well then i need to get used to gambit's accent! it does give his character flavor i guess... Also do you like gambit? what are your feelings about him?
#11 Posted by krotosclone (23 posts) - - Show Bio

He speak creole a blend of French, Spanish and American.

#12 Posted by CellphoneGirl (18799 posts) - - Show Bio
@ownsin: I love his character, but once you read about some of the bad things that he does, it'll give you some shaky feelings. But overall, he's a good character. One of my favorite x-men.

Why would you even need to ask if he's from France if you know his accent is Cajun? Ugh, think, man!

I'm from the south and sometimes I find her accent to be offensive

but on the Topic of Gambit i love the way he talks its just cool to have someone with an accent instead of him being like everyone else speaking complete english
I wish they would make Colossus's Russian accent more obvious, you know have him say "I Must Break You!"
#17 Posted by CellphoneGirl (18799 posts) - - Show Bio
@hydrabob: Some people from the south do talk like that i'm sure, and i'm also sure that the writers aren't stereotyping every person who lives in the south.

do they ever say where she comes from Texas, Georgia, Virginia those are the places that i think have the strongest accents in the South
#19 Posted by CellphoneGirl (18799 posts) - - Show Bio
@hydrabob: Mississippi? Is that one as well? But i'm not sure if she might have moved or not during her childhood.
#20 Posted by hydrabob (14977 posts) - - Show Bio
@xxCellPhoneGirlxx:  IDK i guess that will do since its not where i'm from
still don't like how they portray people from the South though

This is what I was looking for, but Gambit is from New Orleans, right? Also, "New Orleans" in French is "Nieux Orleans", right?

@hydrabob: Is there anything besides their accents that bother you?

the accents are just the most obvious problem they all are portrayed as unintelligent
and big oofs that if they could would yell "Hulk Smash" more than the hulk
and they all are into living on the earth, Southerners aren't Native Americans
and they all aren't racists or bigots.

sorry I'm just letting off some steam

@Edamame:
 La Nouvelle-Orléans.
#25 Posted by CellphoneGirl (18799 posts) - - Show Bio
@hydrabob: LOL well i understand what you mean when saying they all aren't racists, but they also like to play the racist card in movies as well :P
#26 Posted by hydrabob (14977 posts) - - Show Bio
@xxCellPhoneGirlxx:  yeah I know, and don't get me wrong i'm not saying there aren't racists in the south
It's just not everyone you meet which is what i don't get
I mean is everyone in New York Italian? (I know they are it's a rhetorical question)

#30 Posted by PumpkinBomb (493 posts) - - Show Bio
@Edamame:

@Ultimate JSA:  actually a creole is a combination of languages that becomes its own language, it's not a type of person, Gambit is a person who speaks a creole, and the name of that creole is cajun
