In 2016, fans will be getting not one, not two, but three X-Men films: X-Men Apocalypse, Deadpool, and Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. Lots of fans questioned the casting of Tatum as Gambit, as the Internet tends to do, and according to an interview in Empire Magazine, transcribed by ComicBookMovie, Tatum discussed the character and the south:

"I love Gambit... I grew up in the South; my father's from Loiuisiana. We'd go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture. So I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He's kind of a tortured soul and he's not a good guy. But he's not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!"

Many fans are wondering what type of role this film will take in the larger X-Men film universe. While it's rumored that Gambit will appear in next year's X-Men Apocalypse, it has yet to be confirmed and fans of Gambit want to know what kind of story this film will tell.

"Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it's killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It's always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we're going to shift things a liittle but. There's so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I'm super excited."

Having an actor pumped for the film they're working on is always a good thing, but what does he really mean by "changing the tropes of these movies?" What is this film going to do that's different from the rest of the origin stories we've seen in the past? We'll have to wait until 2016 to find out.

If the movie is a retcon of everything like the other movies then this is just another reason for marvel studios to get back the rights for x-men...

Well, we can might rule out a romance between him and Rogue since she's still with Iceman in the movies, but since Gambit's my favorite mutant, I like to see how Channing will do as him

If they exposed gambit as a clone of cyke then i would applaud it cause chris claremount said so and the main marvel universe should follow it...

Gambit can be immensely culturally competent, and the introductions to the Guilds can serve as broader introduction on such a smaller scale of narrative. The basic premise and its concepts would probably show direct correlation to the hit video game series Assassins Creed and even deeper to novels such as Alamut but obviously modern and coated with gravitas and charm. Batman Begins is funny comparison as I always saw it more on the lines of Doctor Strange, but the first hour or so can really help incentivize Gambit's origin.

Tatum is gonna kill it as the Ragin' Cajun.

Watch them pull a Deadpool on him.

Hopefully this'll be great, I love Gambit and I love Tatum. Kinda wish they'd gone with Timothy Olyphant though, playing an older grittier Gambit, but still happy about this. 2016 can't get here soon enough!

Yeah, sure why not? Not every superhero movie is going to be good, so a few clunkers in there evens out the curve. And, yeah the Jump Street movies were good.

@currentthor2015: The first three movies focused heavily on Wolverine, but First Class and DOFP were mostly about Mystique, Xavier, and Magneto; Logan was basically a plot device.

Not sure how gambit currently looks in tge comics, because i havent seen him since then but hopefully they keep the classic look... i dont want to see some made for movie BS...

Tatum seems like a very nice guy, but I personally hate his acting.

If Gambit were to be a clone of Cyclops, then maybe marvel should NOT get the X-rights back. Because that would just be stupid. We all saw how making Madalyne Pryor a clone worked.

If Xmen apocalypse is the last of a "trilogy" with First class, which I dont see as I dont really think DOFP was a true sequel to that film, & Hugh Jackman will be quitting Wolverine soon, then this Gambit film & Deadpool should start a NEW X-film series, & just end what Xmen1,2,&DOFP did. All new actors for those roles, or better yet, dont use any of them, Jean, Cyc, Iceman, Rogue etc & bring in some of the OTHER 9million x charters like Magik, for a future spin-off, Pixie, Armor, & the Gen-X cast.

I like Tatum in Jump Street. He can act to a degree, but it's not like CBMs are generally clinical acting displays, despite how good the film may be.

I'll see this DoFP was great and gives me hope for the X-Men moving forward under Fox.

I honestly think that with the right script, this could be a decent movie. I'm not a Channing Tatum fan per se, but he has the look and enough acting chops to pull off Gambit. Now hopefully this time around his powers will be how they are in the comics. The effects better be on point too
