Gail Simone kicked off of Batgirl (for real this time)

Last week there were rumblings that Gail Simone had left Batgirl now that her exclusive contract had finished. Gail said on her tumbler that that was not true she hadn't left Batgirl. Well it turns out that was only half true.

On Wednesday of last week, new Batgirl editor Brian Cunningham informed me by email that I was no longer the writer of Batgirl.

— GailSimone (@GailSimone) December 9, 2012

So Gail was kicked off of Batgirl.

You have to wonder who is going to pick up the book next, Scott Snyder, Scott Lobdell, or Jeff Lemire that seems to their solution for everything at the moment,

I wonder if this means she will be leaving DC

i dont know what happened to gail. batgirl is so mediocre. she had phenomenal run on secret six and wonder woman.

Wow, shocking yet then again not surprising.

#5 Posted by The_Tree (4409 posts) - 6 months, 9 days ago - Show Bio

Sucks that she got kicked off in such a way. I wasn't a big fan of the book though, it was arguably one of, if not my least favorite works from Simone.

I wouldn't be surprised, DC seems to be making a lot of writers want to leave. Winnick, Rozum, Rucka, Liefeld.

Brian Cunningham is a huge dick apparently. Who fires someone through e-mail? At least have the decency to pick up a phone asshole.

#7 Posted by tim_mik (86 posts) - 6 months, 9 days ago - Show Bio

didn't realize Judd had left DC altogether. as for Gail, I think she could use a break from DC. I subbed to Firestorm partly because of her and that book wasn't very good and Batgirl was just starting to get better with the last few issues. I'm wondering if it was all editorial - specifically the meddling hands of Didio.

Well this is unfortunate news. I'm apparently in the minority when it comes to message boards in liking Batgirl thus far, but I have to wonder what goes into the decision of booting writers off titles. It can't be simply sales, as Batgirl is doing very well right now in that department. Problems behind the scenes, perhaps... Then again, new editor, maybe he just wanted someone else he was more familiar with writing the title, who knows. Kind of a poor way to let someone know that they're not the writer anymore, though. An e-mail? Really? Couldn't pick up the phone and give a formal call?

#11 Posted by arnoldoaad (987 posts) - 6 months, 9 days ago - Show Bio

Well at least im glad that Batgirl has the chance to be readable again

From what I understand, Firestorm was hugely held back by editorial mandates, which was why Gail was so frustrated when writing it. She's the one that chose to leave that title, because of so much interference.

Yea for some reason I was under the impersonation he had just dropped them. Have you ever read Joe the Barbarian? I think it's my favourite thing he's written.

@The_Tree: Perez said it was also the reason for the problems on Superman

@Mercy_: Someone tweeted to her asking if the reason she was fired was because she never had enough women in the refrigerators and she said "funny you should ask that. I wonder what she meant.

it sucks that Simone has been taken off of the title that way but I'm not really sad to see her go....hopefully we'll get a writer who makes the book feel like every issue isn't a filler issue

I think we need to wait to hear more information about the situation before freaking out and hating. Obviously something has happened behind the scenes. Plus, while I have been enjoying Batgirl, I am not heartbroken about a new writer. It was never something I looked forward to seeing. Maybe she is being put on a new project, maybe it is to simply try a different writer to boost sales? We don't know enough yet.

Wow. DC has really been making an effort to act like aholes lately. And now they've fired one of their most talented female writers. Through email!

I'm getting real tired of this. One year ago I used to only pick up DC books, but I'm quickly loosing my intrest in the company and their editorial. Hopefully they'll straighten out eventually so I can go back to enjoying their books like I used to. Meanwhile, thank God for Marvel Now!

Being putting off a book via email is a dick move. That shouldn't happen to anybody regardless of the quality of work they're submitting.

It wouldn't surprise me if she ends up at Marvel.

I don't see how it could be that, considering Batgirl has been selling very well lately (in fact, it's been the highest selling book with a female lead for the past couple months), but yeah I'd say there was definitely something going on behind the scenes. According to Gail, she already has several future issues scripted that aren't going to be used now. New editor just came in and kicked her out for some reason, we won't know the real story until more information comes out.

No doubt. What's worse is that when Mike Nelson tweeted her, asking if she didn’t “put enough women in refrigerators or something?”, Gail replied “Funny you should say that.” And I think it was at that point that everyone following her on Twitter collectively shat themselves and asked “Oh dear God, DC, what have you done this time?!”

WHAT!?!?

That is awful. Truly. From Gail's tumblr I can tell she'd been having problems with DC lately...But not to this extent. Ugh. F*ck you DC for kicking off one of the best writers you had (let alone the best female writer)....Btw I know Batgirl wasn't exactly the best but you can't deny her run on Wonder Woman & SS were astounding. And BoP of course.

And Gail is one of those select writers that have a following of their own. So I don't see logic behind this. But then again, idk....I don't work for DC. I'm saddened because she inspired me a lot and got me in to comics the first place (BoP series) and just...ugh. She'd written out Babs' recovery story too :(

I'd be the middle ground on that. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't my favorite. I think Gail did well with what she was given, but it wasn't her usual standard ala BOP vol 1 and Secret Six, both of which rank in my favorite runs of all time.
