Welcome to a brand new weekly segment, Viners! Every week, we're going to select one talented writer and give some love to two of their famous pieces of work -- be it an entire run or just an iconic storyline. For the segment's debut, we're going to highlight two books Gail Simone is known for: SECRET SIX and her current run on BATGIRL. Do you prefer one over the other? Do you love them equally? Are you not a fan or haven't read either? Head to the poll to vote and discuss it!

    No Caption Provided

Voting is open until Friday morning (ET). That should give you plenty of time to think about it or even reread some of the comics, right?

    Friday's article will include:

    • The poll's results.
    • A "Viner Post of the Week" made for each series.
    • Thoughts from the staff.
    • Other work we recommend by the writer.
    • A tease for next week's writer.

Feel free to make future title suggestions in the comments below or via Gregg's Twitter page.

    @ptigrusmagus:

She has earned her spot, she has been in the industry for years and has wrote most characters. And she is at the point that the has a very big following that would read anything she writes. I'll agree that there are better writers out there, but she still earned a spot in a discussion like this one.

I would say that Secret Six is much better, I love the way that Catman was handled. And she turned Bane from a monster into a relate-able character your are kinda rooting for in a odd way, and that's just scratching the surface as what she covered in that run.

It's a weekly segment -- we'll get around to plenty of talented writers. How about instead of insulting one, you suggest another you'd like to see?

So this is the segment that's replacing the battle poll? Gotta say, I wanted to be upset...but I'm not. This is a really cool idea. That having been said, I unfortunately haven't read very much of Gail Simone's work, so I don't really have much of an opinion on her. But I've heard a lot of good things.

I know it's supposed to be about only one writer, but I'd love to see a future segment involving the Avengers, like about different runs by different writers. Just finished Busiek's run and, I've gotta say, it's been my favorite so far.

No question she is the most overrated writer in all of comics and is popular more for being "outspoken" than her actual writing. Next, how about a legit writer like Brubaker or Busiek?

Yost's X-Force or Scarlet Spider has a very nice ring to it...

Well, part of this feature is to introduce readers to potential stories they haven't checked out before. Was happy to see in the poll that a few said they're now motivated to check out S6.

@k4tzm4n: Is this feature a replacement for the Battle of the Week column, or will they both still be made each week? The Battle of the Week is pretty much my favorite thing going on Comic Vine so I hope it's not going anywhere. :)

This is an excellent idea for a feature and I'm really glad you started with Gail Simone. She brings a unique voice to her writing, and her handling of Babs and Nightwing's relationship is a lot of fun. I enjoyed her work on BoP. She followed Chuck Dixon which is not something any sane writer would ever want to do, and I really like aspects of her Batgirl...however that being said, I have to vote for her Secret Six run. Secret Six was Gail firing on all cylinders, and her take on Catman reworked a character that had little to no relevance in the DC universe, and actually made him someone to root for.

    Some ideas for future features:

Warren Ellis - Thunderbolts and Freakangels

Alan Moore - From Hell and V For Vendetta

Howard Chaykin - Black Kiss and Bite Club

John Ostrander - The Specter and Grimjack

Steve Englehart - Doctor Strange and Captain America

Mike Baron - Nexus and Badger

Garth Ennis - Preacher and Hellblazer

Matt Wagner - Grendel and Sandman Mystery Theater

Secret Six, for sure. The Villains United arc upset a lot of fans who felt their favorites got "jobbed" by the Six, but that was kinda the point. They got incredibly lucky on more than one occasion in some hilarious ways.

I think Gail's Batgirl has evolved into a very underrated book (now that the editorial has probably taken their hands off the wheel a bit), but Secret Six was the book that really got me into DC comics again. Gail mixed her own characters with classics like Bane, Deadshot, King Shark, and Catman, and added a ton of emotional dimension to each of them. Whether it's Ragdoll's bromances with Parademon (later King Shark, briefly and ill-fatedly Mad Hatter), Scandal and Bane's platonic respect for each other, Catman's evolution into an alpha-male, or Black Alice's struggles with her powers, everyone had some sort of personal touch of characterization going on that made me appreciate them all individually.

Sorry, but yes, it's replacing it. I know BotW had fans and God knows I loved it, but the traffic just wasn't there on a consistent basis. I'm hoping this is a nice compromise -- still gives people the chance to debate about stories/have articulated posts highlighted but reaches out to a wider amount of comic fans.

I'd use another series instead of Sandman Mystery Theatre for Wagner because most of his work was plotting while Seagle did the writing.
