It's almost getting hard to keep track of the different G.I. Joe titles. This one, apparently continues where the movie left off. I wasn't aware of this at first. I started picking up on it when I saw Hawk wearing his berret and Scarlett wearing her leather/rubber suit. Snake-Eyes was also sporting his clan Arashikage logo on his suit.
The Good:
We get to see Scarlett and Snake-Eyes go on a covert mission. There's also the *spoiler* return of Storm Shadow. If you saw the movie, you know there's no way that would be the last we'd see of him. It's almost funny how there's no explanation of his return when someone asks, "Isn't he dead?" If the movie sequel does get made, I'm sure we'll see the explanation there. Some of the art is pretty cool. It almost has a non-G.I. Joe/gritty feel to it.
The Bad:
It's practically a movie adaption. But since it's written by Brian Reed, it's not as bad as most adaptions. The story feels like it's too fast paced. The story begins and Scarlett and Snake-Eyes are already on their mission. The lack of explanation of Storm Shadows return left me wanting more (even though I understand it was most likely off limits). The fight between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow left me wanting more as well. While I did like some of the art, it's that problem where the art changes in the middle of the book. To me, it's a little distracting.
The Verdict:
I'm curious to see where this story will go. I wonder if there's any constraints due to the possible sequel. Will these events be null if they don't mesh with the movie script? The writing was good but I felt like I was jumping into the middle of a series rather than the first issue. The change in art was interesting but it always bothers me when there isn't just one artist. I'd have to give this book a 3 out of 5. It felt too brief but I am curious to see what will happen in the next issue.
