Like a comet blazing ‘cross the evening sky, like a castle built upon a sandy beach, like the loss of sunlight on a cloudy afternoon, the future-minded prime time cartoon FUTURAMA was gone too soon for its audience’s hearts when it was canceled in 2003. You can never count an alcoholic kleptomaniac robot and his co-workers down and out, though, because the series returned in 2007, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, like a boomerang spinning on an outback breeze, like a cockroach rising out of your footprint. The sales and subsequent good Comedy Central ratings of the extended features BENDER’S BIG SCORE, THE BEAST WITH A BILLION BACKS, BENDER’S GAME and INTO THE WILD GREEN YONDER have spurred the network to commission a new 26-episode season, according to Hitfix.

And fret not, Planetary Express devotees… the entire voice cast will be back!

Good news, to be sure.I’ve been a fan of the show since its debut at the end of ’99 and was there with the people, getting frustrated when its timeslot kept getting monkeyed around with because of ball games. I don’t claim to be an industry expert, but I wonder what this says about the audiences for adult cartoons when both this and FAMILY GUYwere initally canceled by Fox, only to last longer than most shows that have been considered to have had decent runs. Maybe it’s a sign of what Jeff Katz has been saying about the decline of general audience programming in favor of more specifically-target niches.

Anyway, what do you think about this news, oh bachelor chow-chewing Comic Vine community? Are you ready for more and more special deliveries of fun from Planetary Express? Or should the show have stay frozen in that cancellation cryonics tube.

NICE! Love this show! I was worried about it for awhile when they were saying the voice cast wasn't going to return, so I am very happy to know that they will all be back for it.

This was excellent news last summer when it was revealed. I'm still excited, but this is a pretty strange time to create a thread about it. There are several Staff articles about the topic already, and the fact that they are producing 26 new episodes has been common knowledge for many months.

I'm glad the show will return, but i'm also afraid for its future (no pun intended) . If it happens the same it happened with Family Guy (being a good cult show until it returned and they made it awful since then) it will be a shame.
I also hope the original writers return.

They are. The people who make Futurama love it to death, which is the only reason this is even happening. I have listened to the commentary tracks on all the DVDs a dozen times, and every single person involved in the making of the show enjoys it more than pretty much anything they've ever done. Many of the Futurama writers have advanced degrees, and they get to use them to make incredibly obscure jokes on TV for money. That's a pretty great gig. Ken Keeler, David X. Cohen, Eric Kaplan, and Eric Horsted have all expressed their intent to continue working on the show.
