    Who Says You Can't Base a Comic Company on Just One Character?

    Frew Publications is the first publisher of comics in Australia, starting in 1948 they continue publishing today.

    Their first publication was reprints of the American newspaper strips of The Phantom, however they soon got permission to produce independent stories about the character written and drawn by Australians. This comic has been published non-stop bi-weekly since then, and now numbers over 1800 issues.

    Early in their history they also published other comics such as The Phantom Rider, Mandrake the Magician, The Shadow (not the American character but an Australian one), and others, however by the end of the 50’s, as comics from outside Australia, and other Australian comic companies started to show up they dropped those and specialized in publishing The Phantom.
