Freelancers #1 - Tiny Fighters

4

Get ready for the story of two orphan girls that grew up in a kung fu orphanage and are now trying to make a living as bounty hunters in Los Angeles.

The Good

Looking at some of the covers and the overall idea of two young female bounty hunters in L.A., it's easy to fear that this could be one of those comics that focuses on scantily clad women. While there are two women here, they are the kind that can hold their own and kick some major butt.

Aside from the wacky notion of two female bounty hunters that were raised in a kung fu orphanage, it was the fact that Ian Brill was writing that made me give this a chance. There is plenty of over the top action and the characters are likable. That's the crucial bit. We need to become invested in these characters we're just 'meeting' for the first time.

As you might expect, there is some absurdity involved. But it's just the right amount to entice the stories and make them move along.

The art and colors pops out in certain scenes to make them stand out a bit. It definitely has a fun feel to it which is great in making this a comic to remember.

The Bad

Even though it's not a main focus, there are a couple almost gratuitous moments. Val sometimes wears a small sports bra/tank top outfit which might make movement easier but doesn't quite seem too practical. There was also a moment when Val needed to stitch up Cassandra's shoulder, so of course she had to have her shirt off, wearing just a bra. It might help sell the book but hopefully it will stay as minimal as it does here. There was also just a time or two when the art became a little inconsistent.

The Verdict

It sounded like a crazy idea but Ian Brill shows that it can work. There is something this other side of L.A. you wouldn't think exists. Kung Fu orphaned bounty hunters going on different missions definitely has a fun appeal. We get to see a glimpse into the past of the two leading ladies. It's not often we get strong female leads without having a ton of sex appeal shoved in our faces. This title has just the right amount to attract all readers with the clear potential for a fun and entertaining series. It's always refreshing to read a new series that surprises you in a good way. We're off to a good start and now we need to wait to see what happens next.
