Franklin Richards is destined to be one of the most powerful mutants in the future of the Marvel Universe. As the child of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, he should be guaranteed to become a great hero. The problem is, Franklin possesses an insane level of power. We all know that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Franklin has been allowed to use his powers from time to time. In his younger days, he was even a member of Power Pack. Due to the fact that he has too much power and could easily become unstable, safeguards were put in place. Franklin has had powerful psychic dampers put in his mind to prevent himself from accessing his incredible reality-manipulating powers.

But if he possesses such great powers, is it really possible to prevent him from accessing them? If Franklin has the ability to change reality and create new worlds, what happens if he decides to use his powers whenever he sees fit?

    == TEASER ==

The recent revelation and display in Fear Itself #5 was surprising.

This shows that Franklin has been holding back. Having the power to do pretty much anything you want is a lot to handle. Place that level of power in a child's hands and you're guaranteed to have a bad outcome. Considering his kid sister, Valeria, is smarter than their father and Franklin's left looking like a dork, it is very surprising he doesn't try to compete with her. According to the number of candles on his recent birthday cake, Franklin's five. What five-year-old wouldn't want to show off or create cool things given the power?

Being an omega-class mutant, Franklin has the ability to change reality. Think about that. He can make anything he thinks of come true. Showing bits of his potential over the years, it was during the Onslaught storyline where he first reshaped reality. When it appeared his parents and other heroes had died, he actually created the Heroes Reborn pocket universe.

Because of the risks of a child possessing such power, Franklin has been depowered several times. The question remained what his future would hold. Several times we've seen different adult versions of Franklin. In Fantastic Four #245 he came back, long hair and no memory of who he was until reunited with his mom. Reed's father, Nathaniel, kidnapped him are brought back his teenage counterpart who went by the name Psi-Lord. And of course there was the adult Franklin who was Rachel Summers' boyfriend in the Days of Future Past story.

    No Caption Provided

It was in on his birthday in issue #574 he was visited by yet another future version of himself. As the alarms went off and the Fantastic Four rushed to deal with the intruder, the older Franklin flipped the mental switch in his younger self and gave him access to his powers once again. Later young Franklin was seen under the covers creating a new universe. The reason he came back and did this was because Valeria, in the future, told him to.

The way he used his powers in Fear Itself #5 raises some questions. If he can save a mortally wounded person, what else can he do. He can manipulate reality. The bigger question is how come he didn't do more during the Human Torch's last stand? That occurred after Franklin was visited by his older self. He might have promised his parents that he wouldn't use his powers but would a kid whose parents are absolute heroes just sit back and let his uncle die? He used his powers in front of Johnny but could have easily wiped out an Annihilus Wave. Is it within his power to revive him (assuming Johnny actually did die since we didn't see a body)?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This much power in the hands of a child is frightening. Even if Franklin has the best of intentions and tries to follow the example of his family, the dangers of his powers is astronomical. We've seen kids throw temper tantrums. How do you discipline a child that can create a universe?

Reed and Sue are apparently unaware that Franklin has control over his powers again. Reed would be able to understand the severity of the situation. Valeria speculated that their father did know which is why he had the Leech with his mutant dampering powers room with Franklin.

Psychic dampers temporarily worked in the past but what if Franklin didn't want his powers dampened? His future self seemed to be in control but the future isn't set. Because there has been so many different future versions, it can't be determined what his actual future may hold. Mister Fantastic has faced incredible odds and defeated powerful villains but will he be prepared to deal with his son? He has to admit fully to himself that Frankln has his powers again. Will there be anything he can do if Franklin doesn't want him to?

It's kind of the reason why I don't like Franklin: he can pretty much revert the past or the future to his whim if he wanted. Have to wonder if there's something he can do with his power that's so great that he couldn't stop.

I think more needs to be done to justify the enormous scope of Franklin's powers; it smacks of convenience for the writer.

Characters like him and scarlet witch need limitations if they're gonna be main characters for any given length of time.

Give him psylord style powers... perhaps "depower him" like Nate Grey was done... and yeah, do it in an event.

@bunkerbuster05: It already happened with Days Of The Future Present ;)

Actually, the article is not accurate, Franklin Richards had nothing to do with Days Of Future Past, that was all Kitty Pryde ;)
Days Of Future Present is the name of the X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover that the article mentions.

It's only a matter of time until he gets depowered again.  It seems to be the only thing writers know how to do with characters of his power level.    They really need to step up their game writing wise if Franklin is going to be at full power.  As it stand now Franklin could handle 90% of the Fear Itself event all by his lonesome.  If he can revert Thing back to normal, it stands to reason that he could do the same with the rest of the Worthy.

Here's a twist,  what if Franklin created the Serpent and the events of Fear Itself himself?  He can shape realities... plan and simple.  Does Fear Itself #5 prove that he's been using his powers before this event and not letting on that he has?  The way he goes about it looks suspicious in my eyes.  It definitely raises an eye brow from this fan.  What do you think?

I think he is the most overrated über powerful character in Marvel. First he has to grow into his potential? You know like grow? lol He won't grow... then even if then, in many future realities like Fantastic Four The End, he was just run of the mill really power wise. Franklin isn't really that popular so coupled with his powers he will really just be a deus ex machina type character, sort of more there to serve bigger more popular FF characters and themes.

@MYX: Feels like he should be older. That was just the number of candles, which doesn't necessarily reflect his actual age. I might've missed an actual mention. Valeria is definitely looking older than she should be. Wasn't in in Millar and Hitch's run where it was revealed she could talk before anyone knew how smart she was?

I noticed that his age  has always been debatable since Valeria was born, all know is that for Franklin is older than five ( at least 9 or 10 in my opinion) as in the exiles series was said have been six during onslaught  and Valeria should at the most be three.

My only question, how is he not a teenager yet? He used to be the same age as Cassie Lang who is now the hero Stature and around 18 at least. In Heroic Age X-Men, they showed him to be the same age as Hope (who is around 16 at least). But Fear Itself showed him to be at least 12, what the heck.

Franklin exists in this level of power so that he can be used as a backup Deus ex Machina to Reed's often stupidly convenient inventions.  I hope now that X-man is back that he will re-kindle his friendship with Franklin.

As for who is the most powerful mutant in the 616 universe, who knows that's always up to the writers at the time. But there a certainly a few uber powerful mutants out there.

    Franklin Richards
    Mad Jim Jaspers
Scarlet Witch - If she is a "nexus being" she might trump them all.
Nate Grey - before his so called "depowerment", we'll see how long that lasts....
Hope Summers - maybe one day well find out what she really is?
Jean Grey - oh she's out there somewhere don't you worry!

Lets just hope they don't do some stupid lame story with Franklin and his powers and have him "burn" them out or "suck them dry"  like they did with Nate Grey!!!!

He should pull a James Gordon Jr... What a terrific villain he would make... Because his sister always gets the spot light he is envious and because of the psychic dampers he has lost the part of his brain that distinguishes right from wrong... Reed and Sue turning there own kid into the worlds greatest villain by trying to protect him... (If anyone is reading this that doesn't know about the fantastic four I just made that up and it is not accurate at all)... anywho I can hope

That's odd, really does seem like he should be older. Regardless, yes I agree, all these powers of his are just too much in the hands of a child.  Crazy things can happen, and no doubt the level of power we are talking about here makes him one of the most powerful in the Marvel Multiverse...second probably only to TOAA and the PRB. But then again many cosmic powers of the MU have powers similar so...who knows for certain.  All I can say is that Franklin having these powers at this age is akin to a kid gaining access to a nuclear weapons armament and treating it like its his/her personal Toys 'r Us.

But there a certainly a few uber powerful mutants out there.  Franklin Richards Mad Jim Jaspers Scarlet Witch - If she is a "nexus being" she might trump them all.

When decimation first happened My two thoughts on how it would all be fixed first went to Franklin Richards, then to Layla Miller.  The creation of Hope wasn't even a thought.  There are other power mutants out there still.

Magik: We see how Cyclops is dealing with her now.
Mr. M:  Though evolved beyond the mortal known, just like Nate Grey, he probably exists in some way.
Selene:  I really doubt she is gone as well.
Apocalypse:  He will be back, the boy who was shot in the face was not the En Sabah Nur who was carted off to space to pay his debt to the celestials.
Threnody:  Having the power of all the fallen...is pretty powerful.

@MadMattJaspers:  Actually Franklin is more powerful, I mean Its known that both are extremely  powerful mutants that can warp reality on a comsic scale, but Jim Jaspers is well crazy so it unlikely he can even use use his power the  way Franklin can, I mean I believe he created a pocket universe, but was less developed when compared to what Franklin had done. As well Franklin is known to have other powers in addition to his realty warping, such as telepathy, telekinesis, energy manipulation, etc. Over all I believe no other mutant has all of his powers plus that fact that Franklin still a kid and his power is said to still be growing.

I guess it's about time to give Franklin his own massive story arc then kill him off like Phoenix, Nate Grey and every other powerhouse that has risen in marvel. It's only a matter of time before somebody thinks of a story where this kid becomes a teen in the mainstream universe...actually I'm stopping here cause I just pissed myself off.
