I suppose it began when Cyke started questioning Xavier, which ofc is natural as one grows up, then over the years the garbage the mutants have had to put up with just keeps piling up making most of them into cynics or worse.

The X-Men have never been jerks or pricks. The biggest dicks in the comics are the Avengers. Showing up at Utopia with a army and demanding law over the X-Men and Mutant race, when they never care before.
The only X-Men that have been jerks are Cyclops and Wolverine. Beast, Kitty and Rachel have had their moments and so has Emma Frost. Namor was the biggest dick in the X-Men comics. He not a real X-Men though.
Marvel destroy the X-Men franchise, when they stop being a family and getting rid of Jean and Charles didn't help matters.
you wouldn't be all rainbows and sunshine either if most of the world hated you for existing, especially when there are multiple groups of people with powers who are praised constantly and indeed have government sponsorship, while your group has stuff thrown at them and people marching with hate signs
plus there was the massive genocide and Genosha. And the multiple attempts to finish off the diminished race after M-Day. Also doesn't help the government itself has its own sentinels.
