i just have to make a comment. I absolutely love seeing Emma Frost appearing on so many people's lists. I mean most of the other character that feature are classic x-men from original, all-different, or 80s/90s X-Men... but Emma has only been an X-Man proper for not even 15 years. Well done to her writers over the years for presenting us with a character as distinct and enjoyable to read (whether to love in this case, or hate), to have her as one of the shining stars of the x-franchise in such a short time - well and truly displacing every original x-man except Cyclops, and the residual Jean Grey lovers. Not to mention blitzing virtually every x-man who's come since. Obviously there are the Wolverines, the Storms, Rogues, Nightcrawlers and Gambits... but these character have decades of x-history on the team. Emma wasn't even regularly on page til the mid 90s and Gen x.
1- Cyclops
2- Surge (Challenge me on this I dare you)
3- Jean Grey
4- Magneto
5- Rogue/Rachel/Emma depending on the day....but its Monday so Rogue
Honestly Jean and Cyke are the only too that never leave the list though
not an actual challenge... but still.. Why Surge?

Lol, well i'm sure i was much more prepared when i wrote that but.....
Surge stands out. While a lot of times when we get a young team of X-Men there mostly just teenage stereotypes who eventually become standard X-Men archetypes (smart guy becomes strategist, friendly guy becomes leader, weird girl becomes powerhouse) Surge was taken in a completely unexpected direction and was taken from moody background character (and not even the moodiest one) to the leader of her generation at the time. It's unexpected within the story sure, but seeing a character who would've otherwise been written off be propelled into a prominent role is unique among X-Men stories where we can sort of tell whose gonna stick around pass an arc or two.
And that's not getting into what causes her evolution. She was just the moody girl before the decimation, after it she became the unexpected leader, but then she had to deal with an entire bus load of her classmates being killed, one of her teammates being murdered and mutilated, another being kidnapped, and then fighting FREAKIN' Nimrod.... all of this while the X-Men just sort of shrug each of these events off casually as everyday occurrences. She grows from being moody an isolated, to caring about her teams safety, to eventually leading them into danger when the X-Men fail to react to her and her teams standards. With her final big development being to choose practicality over personal satisfaction or her appearance to the team, which is something we would eventually associate with Cyclops on Utopia alongside other almost militaristic views they share.
All that, plus she's got super speed, electric powers so strong she needs help controlling, and she's part of a group that lived through the darkest part of the decimation period and was changed by it. Some long time X-Men don't have that much development, and most that due had to be introduced with a backstory that interesting....we actually saw the change. So yea, I like Surge because she's a complete character and i think its a crime that she doesn't get used as anything but background fodder.

I'm not going to say that Surge isn't a really cool, distinct character; personally I think she's great and definitely a favorite from the New X-men cast. But you do see how her story parallels that of Cyclops, yeah? you even kind of mention that..

yeah, see I guess I've always seen her as the Cyclops of her generation, so while this stuff does make her stand out as having her own distinct story, it's still pretty easy to see her as an updated version of that character. Even a lot of the little things that are different about her story, like being hooked on drugs to control her powers, would make just as much sense retroactively applied to Cyclops' story.
Not saying I don't like her or get why you do, just throwing that out there..
@oldnightcrawler: She definitely does parallel Cyke, to the point that, like you say, you could revision his story with her elements...and arguably an alternate universe could easily play out with him having the exact same development that she goes through because the end result would be a very similar character.
The thing is that when her character is first introduced you don't see that potential in her. In fact she comes off more similar to X-Men: Evolution's Rogue then to Cyclops initially. And while Cyclops from the get go is the leader and has his leadership qualities on display, Surge being picked as leader would be the equivalent of picking Colossus to lead a team that has Cyclops, Storm, and Wolverine (Prodigy, Dust, Hellion), its not to say he couldn't do it... just that it's not what you would expect for the character.
As a Cyclops fan I can easily see there's enough similarities to make me biased, but i also think that in retrospect the similarities are more glaring then they were. The hardened leader development of Surge was in a completely different direction from where Cyclops was at that point in Astonishing in 08. Really though there's just a lot of development in her character in a short run, and it's done for the most part without any flashbacks or mention of her background, they dont even bring up the drugs after she joins the school. We just see the character change on panel, more so then a lot of character with a lot more time devoted to them.

yeah, I see what you mean, especially about her first appearances having similarities with Rogue's story of joining the team.

well, she goes from where Cyclops was before he joined the team to being the character most like him in just four years. She still has much of the same arc, just a lot faster ;)

Lol I still think she got to "Aggressive Cyke" level, before he did....but my small Surge Revolution will take any acknowledgment of her character development as a win, so Viva la Eléctrica Saviour!

eh, he sort of grew out of it and then back into it, where she just didn't grow out of it.
but, sure.
@koays: An excellent reply Koays... i can understand completely why you appreciate and enjoy a character like Surge now. Thanks :)

5. Rachel Grey
1. Emma Frost - Totally fell in love with her since New X-men, love how sassy and sarcastic whilst also being a warrior princess and telepath expert, she's awesome.
2. Kid Omega/Quentin Quire - Such an awesome rebel, so much fun to read and also relatable personality wise.
3. Iceman - Because Iceman.
4. Kitty Pryde - I have a lot of love for Kitty, a selfless, badass woman who can take down a sentinel just by walking through it.
5. Cyclops - A new addition to my top 5 actually, I'm loving Scott the revolutionist, finally Cyclops being badass!
