The X-Men are some of the most powerful characters in comics. And at full force are the most powerful group in comics with little debate. But some X-Men not only stand out more then others, they are so powerful it makes little sense for them to even be a part of a team . Jean Grey, Xavier, Iceman, Storm, Cable, and at times even Wolverine have appeared invincible or story breakingly powerful in some of their portrayals and have been killed, stripped or altered in order to tone them down or get rid of them.
My question is:
Do you think it takes away or adds to the story/team when a character is written as being unlimited in power, or held back only by their own morals?
And-
Is it ok for characters written that way to stay with the team?
Over Powered X-Men?
@koays: what is matthew malloy's power, i want that power, lol. its obviously tk, tp and can teleport people, maybe some warp/time ability too

Marvel is very careful with his most powerful characters.
They tend to destroy everything when used. ^^
Matthew Malloy seems a little under powered right now. He needs a few power boosts to make him a little more viable now.
@avenger85: Your right...let's make him Bluetooth compatible

LOL true
I think it is stupid to have these overly powerful people on teams. I mean, what is the point, really? Could not they just solve all the problems themselves? And if they cannot, then how could anyone less powerful do so?
The point is simply: over powered the character is a easy shortcut to escape from a situation apparently without exit, or for create astonishment in the reader, who read the story and say: «Wow, cool!»
But after the astonishment what remains is the problem to manage a team composed by characters with power very imbalanced.
Claremont and Byrne had thit problem with Phoenix.
In certain cases is possible remedy over povered the other characters. This is the case of Wolverine, who is seems more strong than his powers would justify.
In other cases the authors prefer under powered the character too strong. This is the case of Cyclops, whose his optic blast seem less effective to what is asserted in the dialogs of the stories.
In still other cases the authors prefer pretend nothing. This is the cases of Storm, Professor X, Jean Grey… Yes, this is also the case of the "half X-Men": Angel.
I think it isn't a good way to write a story.
