And why exactly?

Wonder Woman varies in appearance. I wouldn't mind her looking more traditionally Greek, personally. She usually at least gets wavy hair I believe:

(Granted that's all the same artist.)

It's mostly in the animated universe stuff that they tend to give her long, straight black hair with maybe one or two waves in it.

Actually it's this dude specifically who feels the need to nit pick everything.

Don't get what he means by strait hair being too "white".

Mostly just Jointron who will make bizarre rants about everything, makes little sense, and is generally a really dull tool in the shed.

The expectation that blacks have their hair straightened in professional circles, including in entertainment, is considered offensive. It's a criticism I've seen often enough: that in order to be accepted in the mainstream, black actors had to have their appearance changed to look more white, including straightening hair.

Whether this applies to Wonder Woman, who is only arguably Greek and comes from a mystical island populated with a very diverse group of female inhabitants is, of course, debatable.

What so Wonder Woman isn't allowed to style her hair? If Storm can get away with a Mohawk then WW can straighten her hair if she feels like it.

I'm not familiar with their posting habits, but isn't that off-topic anyway? We can discuss the following:

  • Our preferences for WW's hair
  • Hair texture in terms of racial politics intersecting with superheroes
  • The racial identity of WW as white/non-white

—regardless of the OP's motivations in creating the thread.

For my part:

  • I prefer WW with some waves in her hair but honestly she's looked pretty good in the animated stuff too, including in Young Justice where she has very straight hair.
  • I don't think superheroes should be restricted to natural hair styles, textures, or colors (anime influence partly) but it's always nice to see diversity of features across the line. That's one of the reasons I like that Misty Knight still rocks the giant fro even though it's kinda out of style. I don't think WW is necessarily the best vehicle for that representation, but then I wouldn't mind a black WW (e.g., Nubia).
  • Even though she's traditionally been portrayed as a white brunette, I like a curly-haired traditionally Greek appearance as an emphasis to the Greek pantheon thematically (e.g., current Azzarello run).

Most Greek women have "wavy" hair.

I'm surprised no one has brought up the fact that curly hair is a lot harder/more time-consuming to draw. That probably accounts for the straight hair in the animated series - it would take forever to animate curly hair. Unless, of course, it is curly in the way that African Americans' hair is curly - then it gets easier to draw. I mean, which of these hairstyles do you think took the most time to draw/ink:

Of all the things that they can, and probably will, screw up next time they adapt WW for live screen, hair doesn't even rate on the list of importance.

I prefer curly but she looks great in straight hair too. But this is a really silly thread.
