"To carry my invisible luggage"
That was Wonder Womans own explation during Greg Rucka's run on the series.
I'm pretty sure it was his way of poking fun at the very idea of the invisible plane.

I've always though it ws kind of a dumb idea. Never really made much sense to me. I was glad it when it never showed up after Crisis on Infinite Earths but lost a little of my faith in Byrne when he wrote it back in.

So how about it kids? Can any one explain to me the point of the invisible plane?

it's not a matter of need.
dude, if you had a invisible plane, which is pretty awesome,
wouldn't you fly it even if you didn't actually need to?

she maybe has to go somewhere, where she can not be seen some dangerous place or somthing :) and if you have seen Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, there is a very cool scene with the invisible plane :)

...wasnt she originally unable to fly?

either way, flying is hard work. Why have a car when you can run? you ditch the keys to your car and hoof it, and WW.... will laugh hysterically at you from her jet for running to work. and you can see her too.
....cuz the jets see-through.

Also if she needed to fly someone else somewhere you've got 2 options. Option 1: She grabs you by the shirt collar and takes off. Option 2: You take a seat in a nice, comfy invisible plane.

And it's likly possible she can put normal luggage in the plane too. Just because she can fly, it doesn't mean she can carry a bunch of stuff easily.

Also, it shoots invisible missles. Awesome sauce :D.

Yes, it is a fact that Wonder Woman wasn't able to fly when she used the invisible jet, she didn't have quite a few powers in the Golden Age that she has now.

Superman doesn't have an autopilot.

Say you don't want to use your own powers flying trans-continent all the time, and you don't want to be seen at the same time?  Clearly an invisible jet is the best answer.  How could a visible jet possibly fit those criteria?

because it can carry passengers, she can go into space, has weapons and its cool. all the other heroes are flying their asses off and she's sitting down waving at them while the jet is on auto-pilot.
well i would do that anyway

Indeed, but I think it would still be cool if it was a visible jet. It's just that it's nice that it's invisible when it has to be. It's kind of like her lasso. It's mostly just good for ass kicking, but getting people to tell the truth with it comes in handy sometimes.

Sometimes I think if Wonder Woman's lasso didn't make people tell the truth, and if she flew a visible jet when the need arises, she wouldn't take all the crap she does. People look at it on paper and think it's silly even though the real life government would kill (literally) for either of those.

Clearly it's invisible so she doesn't get parking tickets when she leaves it parked in the road. Although I'm sure that leads to some odd traffic accidents.

I'm almost certain I've got pre-crisis issues where she flys.

The way Superheroes fly is uncomfortable? Just hoverin' in the air like that?
We've always been told she's pretty fast at flyin' allready. Is the stoopid plane faster?

We talkin' normal person or fictional superhero?
I'm not sure if a superhero get's tired from flyin'. It's not as though they're swimmin' in the air.

  • Geoforce admitted that a 10 hour flight from USA to China was better in a plane rather than flying on his own.
  • Superman in JLA Confidential said that Wonder Woman's plane was a faster way to travel from Earth to Moon than his own flight speed.
  • Wally West, The Flash said that even though he could be anywhere in a matter of seconds he preferred to flight in a plane for the company of his friends

I guess it depends in your point of view...

Interesting points but...
Geoforce isn't as fast or powerfull as WW or Supe's.
Supe's flight speed changes every time DC has a crisis retcon. About twice a year then.
Wallys friends can't keep up when they go joggin' in the park.

And nothing will change the fact the invisible plane is a lame idea. Which is probably why it was written out when DC decided to try to get rid of the more fantastical elements of their universe.

Not sure if Family Skits are in continuity :P

Yeah. Big family guy fan.
Saw an episode of south park that just ruined it though.
Pointed out how it used the clip jokes so much. Was never the same for me after that.
Oddly enough the next season seemed to have reduced them.

@Gylan Thomas:
Come now, that's an opinion, not a fact. I thaught the invisible plane was cool when she obliterated a demon's torso with it. Also, she does go places with people less powerful then her pretty often (She went to Hong Kong with Black Canary, who said the plane was much better then getting the "Fireman's Carry" across an ocean). And being invisible is just nifty.  Seriously, the government would spend billions of dollers and kill your family to get something like that. Hell, even our visible stealth bombers are a billion a piece.

Here's the answer to put this lingering question among WW fans, once and for all!......

1- Invisibility

2- Cargo

3- The shelter factor

4- Useful onboard equipment

5- Its yet another helpful tool in her arsenal of peace, as proven in the climactic scenes of my script where she uses it to contain a nuclear bomb blast.

Allegoricallty speaking: Since the i-plane is an allegory of the protective invisibility that people (ie. women) sometimes need to survive in the brutal workplace, the in-story Invisible Plane still has protective qualities for WW whenever she needs it.

It's usefulness is nearly entirely dependent on if, and how fast, Diana can fly on her own.

If she is like the modern versions, she has no practical use for it, because:

  • Under her own power she can cross the globe in a matter of seconds.
  • She is one of the absolute strongest beings on the planet, so she can carry her own luggage with ease, almost regardless of nature and size.
  • Being invisible only matters if it also soundless. Aside that it should be against Diana's character to be sneaking around and hiding from people. She's an Amazon after all, a warrior born, she'd meet any challenge head on and call it out if she has to. Not to mention, if it's radar she is planning on avoiding, then she should be safer without it, being far smaller and doesn't have an engine that can be tracked.

I believe they made a nod to Wonder Woman's invisible jet in Taylor Swift's Bad Blood video. The video also references Kill Bill, Black Widow, the 5th element, Hit-Girl etc
