Note: THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL #1 is on sale 1/7/15.

The Good

Great Lakes Avengers was a book near and dear to many fans hearts and one of its premiere characters, Squirrel Girl, became the highlight of that team, probably after she beat Thanos on her own. Years later, fans finally get to see this character in her own series, which is the most over-the-top and ridiculous book Marvel currently offers, and that is meant in the best way possible.

Squirrel Girl is a silly character, on paper, but that's not a diss on her. It's who she is and writer Ryan North, artist Erica Henderson, and colorist Rico Renzi really embrace that idea and turn it up to 11. The opening, alone, of this issue sets the tone of the entire series. Squirrel Girl takes down some criminals in a park while singing the song "Squirrel Girl," which goes to the classic tune "Spider-Man." Right off the bat, you know she means business because she has her own sweet theme song.

The fun never really stops here as Squirrel Girl creates an alter-ego, so her loved ones don't get hurt because of all of her crime fighting. The way she makes these logic jumps as to why she needs a secret identity is pretty dang comical because her loved ones seem to be just the squirrels. She's also not acclimated well when it comes to acting like a normal person without super-powers. Time and time again, she forgets regular folks don't have super-strength nor can they talk to animals. We really get a great feel for this character in this first issue and it actually comes off as a great starting point for new readers, even though Squirrel Girl has become a cult hit with fans and her character has been buried in limited series or team books few people read.

What's most intriguing about this book is that it's really geared towards all ages. While a man in his early 30s (that's me!) can enjoy what's going on in this book, so could a young girl or boy, even someone the age of 5 or 6 could get a pretty big kick out of this. The dialogue fits that all ages scheme, but it has a lot of jokes that play to all audiences. Most importantly, Henderson and Renzi artistically create this book to also have that wide range of appeal. The art really pops off the page and it's bright, keeping the reader fully engaged in this very animated style of book. Lastly, North gives this first issue a story with a heavy moral at the end where Squirrel Girl discovers that sometimes, talking to someone is a better way to resolve an issue that fighting. Maybe I'm reading way too into all of this, but this is a book that could easily sit on the main shelf at your LCS or on the kids' rack

The single panel for the preview of the next issue has me super-pumped.

The Bad

If you don't have a sense of humor and can't find a way to enjoy a book geared more towards all ages, then you won't enjoy this.

The Verdict

Expectations were pretty high for this first issue but THE UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL exceeds them. North, Henderson, and Renzi have put together something that appeals to both young and old that is an incredible amount of fun, featuring a great, stand-out star, who at times isn't all there. The first issue delivers the direction for the series, gives readers some action, and develops the character all in a one-two punch that doesn't feel like an information dump. This is a book you're going to want to check out especially if you like to read something that borders on the silly. I highly recommend this issue.

Note: OPERATION: S.I.N. #1 is on sale 1/7/15.

It's a shame that a lot of characters are going to get nerfed and downplayed. I'm glad that the comic book shop that I work at aren't ordering this lol.

While I'm always happy to see fun, lesser known characters get ongoings (come on Ambush Bug!!) I have to pass on this. The art just ain't doin' it for me, and honestly, not a fan of Squirrel Girl, which is odd, since I love squirrels...

It really sounds like a badly run shop if they're not ordering something like this.

I'm not huge on the art, but if She Hulk taught me anything it's that if a book is written well enough I can excuse mediocre art(imo) and still enjoy it. I will give it a shot.

@illmatic4177: Debatable. My comic book shop is actually pretty good. We run things a little differently, that's all. If Squirrel Girl appeals to you, then I guess that's cool.

The "this" in that sentence seemed kind of vague. And like I said, I'm still only giving myself a 50% chance of liking this.

Just the concept of this character and how she's "unbeatable" frustrates the heck out of me, but I think rather than spewing hate about it I'm just going to use the patented Mat Elfring approach of "not for me".

@johnny_blaze: It just seems that as a comic book shop, you would cater to all comic book fans. I mean this is a big enough title (relatively speaking), it seens odd that a full service comic book shop would not order it. My shop pretty much orders EVERYTHING, and Im gratful, I have ended up reading some good stuff I had nevet even heard of. This title does not really appeal to me all that much, but it got a great review and is a 1st issue so I will give it a shot. I would be surprised if it made it to my pull list though.

Sadly, I'm only half joking. A lot of fans seem to think comics should only be one way or another, and can't encompass multiple genres and styles.

I'm going to see if I can remember all of the complaints I've heard about this:

-Squirrel Girl doesn't deserve her own book and/or is a terrible character.

-Comics should be dark and serious.

-This is the worst art ever used in a professional comic book.

-The writing isn't funny.

-They're just trying to appeal to fat girls on Tumblr.

As a big Kraven fan, I was so skeptical about this. Even if I thought it was hysterical and a great issue, there's still the concern that Kraven would become a joke and get wrecked just like everyone else who dares to face Squirrel Girl. Man, I'm so happy to see how it was handled. Not only was this fun and legitimately hilarious in a few scenes, but I'm thrilled they finally gave Kraven the epiphany he deserves since becoming unkillable (well, kind of). Here's hoping someone else picks up that plot point and runs with it. This is the kind of book that warrants extra features in the back. I'm sure many of us would love to see more of those cards.

This issue had pretty bad art (though it fits the book), the jokes weren't clever and the writing was meh. I'm gonna stick with this series because it's enjoyable to an extent but this issue just wasn't really that good.

I love this comic. Everything about it. the art, the writing and the characterization all fit the tone. Once again Marvel knocks it out off the park. Not only do we get an awesome new comic but a strong developed female character. Now all that left is the Ms. Marvel/Squirrel Girl crossover.

P.S I find her really hot! like DAMN! i.e she is funny, witty, smart, strong eccentric and she has a tail. Am i right? huh? huh?

I was really looking forward to this comic. But I can't get over how F!@$ing Ugly she looks. I'll check it out when they get a new artist to draw it. It looks like crap, and I just can't read it like that. She doesn't have to be a Super model, but she should look a lot better then that.
