In Man of Steel couldn't superman just have put his hands over Zod's laser-beam eyes?
Why didn't Superman just cover up Zod's laser eyes?

Same reason he let his dad die. He was a moron.
@thebhramabull: zod still could've come back. his only choice was to kill him. sometimes heroes kill people. that doesn't make them a moron
@smashbrawler: yeah... it's like people think he had to kill Zod because of those three bystanders...
I was joking, I liked that he killed Zod, he could easily found another way to stop him frying that particular family, but the point was Zod would have kept trying to harm humanity and what not. I thought that Clark letting his dad die was entirely moronic though.
@thebhramabull: ok. yeah, I get it. but didn't his dad kinda want to die? I somewhat got that vibe from the scene where he died. but I think the whole point of the movie's ending was to show how alien he is on the planet, and that he had to do something with his powers that was good.

This made me laugh pretty hard. I don't know if I agree with him being a moron though. I think him letting his dad die showed that Clark really trusted his father and did not want to disappoint him, but then he kinda threw all of that out of the window when he used his powers in front of everyone anyways to defeat Zod. I wish they had gone another way with the father character but that's for a different thread.
Yeah you could see how much it affected him when he killed Zod, he just severed his last ties to his home planet and had chosen Earth and humanity as his home. I really liked it. Plus I'm pretty sure this incident will lead to his "no killing rule", that I assume he will develop. (Maybe even Batman will call him out on killing someone)
I just really hated the whole Pa Kent death scene for numerous reasons.
1. Clark being a douchebag teenager, "you're not my real dad!"
2. Martha loves her dog so much she tells her son and husband to go back into a freaking tornado to retrieve it from the car. If you loved your dog you would have remembered to let it out with you when you got out the car in the first place. Not only that, she was sitting in the back with the dog and forgot to let it out She shut the fkin dog in the car.
3. The whole Clark trusted his dad that the World wasn't ready for him to reveal himself, so he let his dad die instead is complete and utter bulls**t. If anyone truly loved their dad, and they thought they had a reasonable chance of saving their dad's life, they wouldn't give a crap about that, they would save their Dad's life. It's total nonsense.
I enjoyed Man of Steel, it's just that this one scene really irritated me. (Plus the amount of action scenes was slightly too long for me)

Yep. The typical 'last thing I said to my loved one was something hurtful' way of going about things. Bad and cliche writing. Stupid stuff.
@thebhramabull: Yeah I get what your saying. I think it was basically Pa saying "don't risk your identity on me because I love you." and I think he understood that Clark was upset over his powers.
@matteopg: @smashbrawler: These.

Are this many people, really that short sighted? FFS
I love how people keep missing the point about this scene.

They had Superman kill Zod to establish his moral compass. He'll never take another life after that experience.
In Man of Steel couldn't superman just have put his hands over Zod's laser-beam eyes?
And after that what would he do? He could barley even hold Zod down and Zod was going to kill the entire human race.

Because Zod was crazy and hell-bent to kill all humans. There was no prison for such powerful being, no restrains, no anything than whould stop Zod from killing exept his neck. Face it. If there is Zod than there is problem, no Zod - no problem. Better eliminate threat once and for all than letting more innocents die. Batman better to act that way in Joker's case.
What was really stupid? Whole J.Kent death. Its just so not in spirit of character and so... absurd.
Zod gets killed in Superman 2.
No one cares.
Zod gets killed in MOS.
Everybody cares.
Clark cust his beard with this power, so its obvious that Zod laser eyes would had cut his hand and he would had killed the family.
Because David Goyer (writer) chose for him to do so. There was another ending where Superman didn't kill zod, but still found a way to save the earth from Zod. Goyer just didn't want to choose that option.
Why didn't Zod just move his eyeballs instead of moving his head?
Never thought of that.

The movie gets worse when you think about the stupid stuff that happened in it.
Guys! He couldn't possibly hold in Zod's heat vision with his bare-hand. Faora had armour and still got her hand toasted. This thread is pointless.

Because Zod wanted Superman to kill him.

@thorson: You realize the villains and the world engine caused like 99% of the destruction in the movie right? Superman is only directly responsible for a couple silos and a gas station being destroyed. The rest of that damage was caused by A. The villains forcing him to fight in populated areas since they kept moving the fight that way and B. The World engine screwing with gravity.

Because he knew he would one day get bored of stopping zod again and again so decided to put an end to him once and for all. And he is not insane like Batman in this regard.

me neither. Now that I think about it Zod could've cut them up instantly.
Not that I want to reopen this particular can of worms...but the way I interpret it is, yes Clark probably had a bunch of tactical options to prevent Zod from killing that family, but in that moment Superman realized that the killing would never stop. Supes was a novice who has hardly fought his entire life, while Zod is a trained soldier and warrior with nothing to lose. I think seeing an actual family of people being threatened with death made him realize that the only way to permanently stop Zod was to end his life. That's how I took it at least.
People are still mad about this? Lol deal with it (;
